UNC’s Next Basketball Coach

There's pretty much no one with close ties to the program left to consider, so I think you're safe there.
Agreed. There's no Roy Williams or anything close out there right now. I think Hubert will be the last stand of the old UNC/Dean Smith coaching family tree, which is one reason why I hoped he would be successful. It's been a truly remarkable run of coaches. And his staff is filled with UNC greats - Sean May, Jeff Lebo, Marcus Paige, etc.

I'm sure that many will celebrate seeing them leave, and given their overall lack of success it's probably time, but personally I'll still be sad to see them all go, as it marks the real end of a great legacy and an entire era of UNC sports. I'm sure that a new coach will have no UNC connections and will likely have a staff with little to no UNC connections and no commitment to maintaining many of the traditions that Coach Smith and others established over the years. And I'm sure that many will say that's exactly what the program needs, but it still doesn't make me feel much better about the changes that are likely coming.

My first call would be Dusty May. Yes, he already has it made at Michigan. Yes, it would be impossibly difficult to imagine him leaving. Yes, every college coach dreams of coaching at Duke, Carolina, Kansas, or Kentucky. Make the call and make the case.
I think, when push comes to shove, we might find coaches willing to be the first coach at UNC after the position leaving the family to be a bit more hesitant than you might think, especially with us being so quick to abandon Hubert. I know and understand the objections to Hubert although I'm nowhere close to being in full agreement. That doesn't mean that everyone will feel like he's been that terrible. Even those that do are likely to be just a bit gun shy about doing better when they are likely to start off more disadvantaged. Do you really imagine our fan base developing more patience or our program in more disarray?

This is a good point. However, I do think there are a number of coaches who see UNC is not realizing its potential and know it can do better.

Yes, but are they willing and capable of doing the job with the shot clock running?

I think that's all there is for me to say that has any possible value in this discussion.

This is just my opinion which obviously isn’t worth a thing: when/if we make a change, both the athletic department and the new coach must be fully committed to running a 21st century program and not continuing to operate like it’s the 20th century. That means funding, obviously. That means a strong GM. But that also means embracing and properly using technology and taking full advantage of staffing. We need to modernize completely.

We are not quick at all to abandon Hubert. 5 years in this era is more than enough time. 1 miracle 4 weeks does not make a good coach. Some people may be hesitant to leave but it won’t be bc of our actions in regard to Hubert

It's 5 years and you might be surprised to learn that coaches are shocked that we stuck with such recruiting and coaching failures for so long. The interval is long enough.

I bet Bubba is glad he is stepping aside
Don’t get me wrong I like him
Agreed. Two disasters of coaches in the most prominent roles, an increasingly hostile and politicized administration, moving the Dome off campus while reducing student seating by 40%, and no clue on NIL. He is getting out just in time.

especially with us being so quick to abandon Hubert.
this is ridiculous framing. we're in the midst of his 5th season at the helm.

that isn't remotely "so quick" in coaching. he's had plenty of time.

HD and the iron 5 gave us a glorious couple of months in early 2022 but the only full season that has been up to our standards was 23-24.

1/5 is not even remotely good enough.

With or without a coaching change, I imagine we will see a mass exodus of players who have eligibility left and are not in a position to go pro. The one such player I really hope we can keep is Dixon. I think he has the potential to be a really good college player and a serious 3-point threat.
