Withers was an interim. Merit hardly matters. It's perception. And if the perception is inc fire a guy averaging 25 wins a year bc he was black and did not reach standard established by dean and roy it could hurt recruiting.
We’re already paying a Hubert tax in the marketplace because his reputation is so bad in the agent industry. That’s how we ended up with a top 5 budget and a top 20 roster and why we had so much trouble landing a PG.

Our recruiting would likely be the first thing to improve with a new coach.

That's one opinion..I don't know. But to ignore it as a possible factor would be foolhardy. We brought in Wilson. Had two 5 stars in cadeau and Jackson. Adams is atop 25 guy so close. And the no. 1 PG in country apparently was ready to come but the Hubert uncertainty has him in limbo.

I'd guess Wilson, Vessar, and Trimble ate up most of the budget.

Curious, what's your source for his rep in the agent industry?

That smoke doesn't help anything.

If UNC jettisons a lifer with a 70% win percentage they need to get it right.
they need to get it right regardless of who they'd be replacing. Hubert's win percentage is the lowest UNC has seen in living memory outside of 3 years of Doherty. If that's because "living memory" includes two members of CBB's Mount Rushmore, well, then, that's the standard that UNC should be hiring towards. What evidence is there that Hubert could even approach that kind of stature?

Since Scheyer Face took over at dook, it's

Hurley 113-23
Scheyer 109-23
Few 106-24
Pitino 94-31
Izzo 90-38
HD 89-39
Calipari 83-42

It is not a sourced opinion. It has been widely discussed on cbb podcasts and on IC. We are overpaying for talent when we should be getting a UNC discount. The media attention at UNC is second only to Duke, and yet we have had two years in a row of being unable to build a complete roster through the portal. Why could we not get big men in 2024? Why could we not get a PG in 2025 and ultimately paid through the nose for Kyan Evans? We should not be getting stood up at the alter by Nait George or completely ignored by Xavian Lee.

The reality is that a strong coach combined with the UNC/Jordan brand should be able to out recruit almost any school in the nation not named Duke. But we are unable to do that despite vast financial advantages over almost every other program in the country.

And when Cadeau transfers to the No. 2 team in the country and elevates his play (albeit not unreasonably so) or Cade Tyson becomes a top 3 scorer in the Big10, it only reinforces those prejudices against Hubert.

Again, he could still turn the ship around. A strong finish this year, closing on some recruits and being top 10 next year would do wonders for his career. And that is still possible. But if we do have to get rid of Hubert, I have 0% worries about recruiting suffering on the ground that we fired a minority coach.

CJones amongst others mentioned it last offseason at IC. It was pretty evident in our PG search. I think, despite the headwinds, Tanner and Hubert did a decent job assembling a roster (even with the obvious defeciencies and not exactly most efficient money wise). I think it is unfortunately going to put us in a no man’s land that leaves the powers that be in a tough situation (especially with the disaster on the football front and the botched basketball stadium move) that I don’t trust them to navigate well

Good luck with that. Hoping to find another Dean or Roy is pretty much an impossible ask.

We fired Withers and we can fire Hubert. The days of not firing someone because they are a minority are long since over -- especially in college basketball.

I return to the point that Hubert cannot get special bonus points because he is an alum, or a "lifer," or a nice guy, or because he knows the Carolina way. He needs to be judged on his merits. And like all firing decisions, there is no guaranty that the replacement will be better.

But the fact that the replacement involves some risk is not a reason to stand pat. Kentucky may do worse than Mark Pope with its next coach, but if he can't get the job done, it is going to take that risk.

The good thing for Hubert is he still has a chance to turn the ship around.
This is a point where I disagree, less because of the individual case but because it represents a pretty dramatic change in how we have looked at our program for 60 years. I don't necessarily think it means a lot extra but I hate being hasty in such a transient and unsettled time when it's so committal. I don't expect a lot of agreement but I did want to go on record.

Nah...I don't think calla likes black people or good people in general.

You anti-Hubert folk are more in line with the calla way.
it’s certainly not why i’m anti-Hubert, but i was shocked at how much Hubert stuff turned into some Anti-DEI statement recently on the boards

You should not have been surprised.

You should also try not to be anti-Hubert. As long as he's your coach you should be 100% behind him.
