UVA's Tony Bennett retires

There were rumors after last season that Bennett was going to retire so this doesn't surprise me. What nyc posted makes a lot of sense. Dealing with the NIL/portal BS would be insufferable.

So, grain of salt and everything, but what I heard from a diehard UVa guy is that Bennett has no health crisis or anything. Apparently he went to the AD last Spring to say he was going to retire, but after being asked to give it a week to reconsider eventually got convinced to come back and signed the extension as part of that. But apparently through the very early practice and fall recruiting cycle Bennett decided he just can’t take it anymore — his heart is not in being an NIL GM and managing rotating lineups every season.
Completely understandable . . !

Ok, that’s kinda funny.

I know folks who aren’t UVa fans hated the style/pace, but this was an unexpected gut punch for the UVa community.

Timing is….odd. Hoping it’s not something health related with him or his family.
That was funny. 😁

I agree, I hope it is simply that he has money and wants to travel the world or something innocuous.

This is some sort of scandal.

Elite 55-year-old D1 NCAA basketball coaches who have won national titles don’t retire or resign on October 17th.
I hope it isn't.
It sort of says something about our society that many people probably have the exact same thought.

As the preseason wore on and the season is almost upon us, I’m guessing he realized his heart just isn’t in it anymore and he doesn’t want to be in that job if he’s not “all in”

I will be shocked if it’s any type of scandal.

Seemed like a nice guy off the court, but I hated, hated his style of basketball on the court. I'd rather have watched paint dry than watch most of his teams play. Just painful at times. I realize they won lots of games with that style, but it was definitely not fan-friendly basketball. So I'm not sorry to see him go. Hopefully UVA gets a new coach who favors a more up-tempo style of play. At any rate, I hope he enjoys his retirement.

I just posted this on IC Basketball

My High School "was " UVA Undersized not a lot of speed-went to the Final four every year for the State

Coach Ron Einerson was a protege of UW Green Bay's coach

Tony's dad So I have a thing about the Bennetts They remind of Coach Einerson , Neenah High School Rockets

Very high risk to reward ratio with that style of play these days.

I would like to see his graduation rate Probably pretty good -maybe till recently

There was rumor in the summer that he was thinking of stepping down. Also a rumor that UVA might go with a groundbreaking hire…female coach.

I hated his style because it seemed like (perhaps my POV was biased) the refs decided that since this is Virginia’s style, then we will let them play tough defense. That often translated to allowing UVAs scrappy “tough” defenders get away with physicality that would get a whistle for players on the opposite team.

Definitely some underlying issue here. His health or that of a loved one. Hate to think that it is basketball-related.
Can't rule out some sort of "scandal" . I think what you said is more likely. Otoh, running afoul of some sort of authority is increasingly easier. Whether it's a real scandal or a personality conflict would have to be determined. He might have had issues when he realized he can no longer be the dick his father was.
