Per the link, Mayor Pete is playing JD Vance in debate prep for Walz.

Rep. Tom Emmer (MN) is standing in for Walz for the Vance debate prep.

"... Walz has said he expects Vance to be well prepared.

"Look, he's– he's Yale Law guy. I'm public school teacher, so we know where he's at on that," Walz told MSNBC's Rachel Maddow after the Sept. 10 debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump in Philadelphia. "... I fully expect that Senator Vance, as a United States Senator, a Yale Law guy, he'll come well prepared."

The debate will be moderated by "CBS Evening News" anchor and managing editor Norah O'Donnell and "Face the Nation" moderator and CBS News chief foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan. ..."

Will be interesting if this is the last debate. Don't think it'll change the outcome of course but Walz has himself stated he's a bad debater. On the other hand, Vance is like a robot of saying weird and offputting things.

I think Walz saying he's a bad debater is more of the "we're down seven in the fourth quarter" stuff.

I fully expect him to drag JD Vance all over the debate stage.
It reminds me of Dean Smith talking up Mugsy Bogues and how hard it will be for UNC to beat Wake Forest (back when Wake was not good). The rule is that you should always talk up your opponents -- gets them overconfident and keeps your expectations in check.

I expect Vance to deliver crisper rebuttals and soliloquies, while Walz will likely meander and stumble on his words more often. That said, amidst the "crispness", Vance will have a number of rehearsed "this-is-how-normal-folk-talk" quips that die of dysentery in the uncanny valley.

I expect Walz to do well in a battle of personalities, but on the details we'll just have to see. I expect* Vance to be pressed on his "making up stories" and eating the pets claims, and we'll see if he hews closer to the facts in his responses. I expect Walz to be pressed to answer for his running mate's flip-flops from her 2019 run, which they really never got to in the presidential debate because of Trump's self-immolation. The VP debate may also revive the early attacks on his service record and DUI arrest.

My hunch is they'll each focus on the things they do well and try to maximize their respective strengths...Vance will speak about all the weird things Republicans love and Walz will be down-home and folksy. The base for each side will be happy with their respective candidate's performance and it'll effectively end up a draw.

You may be right, but that would have Vance defending his prior statements while ignoring Trump’s, and Walz defending Kamala’s prior statements while not being asked about his own views. If Walz allows that to happen, it will be a pretty big fail on his part, and I don’t think that’s particularly likely.

Vance enlists allies for intense debate prep sessions ahead of next week’s showdown with Walz

"...That preparation includes reviewing footage of the governor’s previous speeches and studying binders of research regarding his policies, a person directly involved in the debate prep told CNN.

The preparation is also expected to include a mock debate later this week with House Majority Whip Tom Emmer playing the role of Walz, while Monica Crowley – Donald Trump’s former assistant secretary for public affairs at the Treasury Department – will sit in as the mock moderator, two sources familiar with the planning said.

Vance’s team approached Emmer, a Republican congressman from Minnesota who has known Walz for years, to aid in the Ohio senator’s debate preparation, the sources said. Emmer has spent the last month studying Walz’s mannerisms and rhetoric to prepare for the role. The New York Times first reported Emmer’s involvement with Vance’s debate preparation.

Crowley, meanwhile, was enlisted by Vance’s team to give the mock debate session as “real and professional” of a feel as possible, the source with direct knowledge of the preparation said. Before serving in the Trump administration, Crowley was a Fox News contributor and occasionally sat in for Sean Hannity on his nightly show. ..."

This should be more of an actual debate. That said, I expect both to hew to their talking points rather than engage in substantive discussion of policy.

It is said Vance will try to portray Walz as an extreme leftist masquerading as a moderate. And attack his military record. Ha!
I’m sure Walz is quaking in his boots. Ole J.D. better look the eff out… Coach is gonna blow his ass away. I feel a halftime “pep talk” brewing…. And ole J.D. is gonna fumble the ball multiple times and get called for several penalties, mostly of the personal foul variety.

I think the optics will determine the "winner" more than the issues.

I predict that the takeaway for the viewrers will be :

Walz is funny and a guy I would want to have a beer with
Vance is creepy and a guy I would not want anywhere near my small children

Walz may not be good in debates, I don't know

But JD is a remarkably unlikable person by most everyone outside of deep MAGAs.

So basically just having him on national coverage is very likely to hurt the Trump campaign

I bet this debate makes Trump want to get back in the ring because he will feel like Vance is taking a little bit of the spotlight and also if Vance does poorly, Trump will want to "fix it."
