Florida surgeon is being charged with 2nd degree manslaughter after killing a person by removing his liver when the operation was supposed to remove his spleen. This is the second time -- the surgeon also had a case where he removed part of the pancreas instead of the adrenal gland.

Here is the order suspending his license. It's a crazy read. He saw the liver and thought "this is a huge spleen, so diseased and it migrated across the body." That's like confusing Texas with Maryland on a map. Good lord.

This guy is 44 years old. That means he's probably been practicing for at least a little while. I don't know how he could possibly have gotten this far if he can't tell a spleen from a liver. Either he's Dr. Nick Riviera or he has mental health/substance abuse problems.

The worst medical school has to have a student that finishes last in the class every year.

True, but they don’t typically match into surgical residencies.

But I will say when I was at Duke for pharmacy school rotations there were some residents there I would not let within 10 feet of me or a family member.

Edit: there was one in particular that I will never forget- managed to nearly kill a patient putting in a central line in the ICU. Just looked him up and he’s now a cardiac surgeon.

How does one keep their medical license after the first fuck up?
I think disciplinary proceedings were happening when the second fuck up happened. Not fast enough, which is why they went to an emergency order.

But yes, it is puzzling. At the very least, how does one keep the hospital privileges
