2024 National & State Elections (Not POTUS)

Thanks for 1. As for 2, it's not the outcome that would be horrible, so much as that the counting method impacts who wins. And in fairness to me, I'm just coming up with hypos off the top of my head, which is why I chose easy round numbers and close vote totals.

That said, I think you're right that this would probably only matter in very close elections. And very close elections have a certain arbitrariness to them anyway. I'd have to think more to know if it's more generally a problem outside of niche scenarios. I doubt it.

I think total vote would solve this particular problem, though again I would want to think it through before committing (or at least do a bit of algebra), and I'm not going to do that now. It doesn't really matter all that much. If RCV passed in every state, even if my concerns are valid, they just wouldn't be significant compared to some of our other vote counting methods or election laws generally. So I'm not opposed to it. I'm just not enthused about it. If I had to decide whether to vote for it, I'd give it more careful consideration. Probably I would.
Joe-public definitely isn't pouring this much though into it. And I haven't pondered it as deeply til your response yesterday. I think I latched onto the premise that it would yield more centrist or moderate candidates, but there are outlier cases where that isn't always true.

Has there ever been a more enormous beta bitch in American politics than Rafael Cruz?

Won't matter but he's just crushing Rafael Edward Cruz
He truly is. At a minimum, he’s significantly injuring Cruz for the next election. I recognize that’s a long ways off, but many of these electoral battles must be seen in a decades view. The fact Dems aren’t conceding Texas, like they did for many, many years, is a damn good thing, and I love Allred’s “fuck you mf’er” vibe.

I think that Cruz will likely win reelection in another close (for Texas) race, as he did in 2018. Having said that, I do think the by-now well-established "weirdo" factor for Cruz, combined with getting ripped apart in debates like these, does ensure that Cruz will never fulfill his ambitions to become president, and it's very unlikely that he'll even win the GOP nomination. Like DeSantis, he's too weird even for GOP primary voters to stomach. He'll probably remain in the Senate as long as he wants, but that's as high as he'll ever get, imo.

From what I've seen, I really like her and it seems like she's doing a great job. NC Democrats have needed to get organized and get their crap together for decades, and she appears to be at least making the right moves in that direction. A revival of the NC Democratic Party at a statewide level, especially in rural areas, is going to take a number of election cycles, but she seems to have the energy and drive to keep with it. And by reviving the Democrats in rural and small-town areas, I'm not talking about them actually winning most of those areas, but at least trying to become competitive in some of them again. And that's going to take awhile, but hopefully she sticks with it.
