American Indians or South Asians?

I hate that we still use the word Indian to refer to Native Americans. I understand; that's how our law is written, and my understanding is that some tribes like to be called Indian. But it's still a pain in the ass for those of us with family connections to India. My son describes himself as half-Indian and in his crowd people know what he means, but if he went to Oklahoma and described himself that way, everyone would get the wrong impression.

Nah. It’s taxes plain and simple. At least amongst the ones I know, mostly hoteliers and physicians. Along with the gas station owners and laundromat owners.

South Asians. Morrisville is probably 70% Indian, as I'm sure you know many are extremely socially conservative. IMO they are insulated from what the GOP actually is because they live in mostly educated liberal areas. They don't understand they will always be the "others" to the average conservative voter, wish they'd drive 30 mins into the country and experience what the modern day GOP is all about.

My wife voted in Morrisville this morning and an Asian couple working the Republican booth at her precinct came up to her and passionately encouraged her to vote for the constitutional amendment requiring people to be 18+ years of age and legal citizens in order to vote.

I agree the amendment is redundant based on a lot of discussions we've already had on here that don't need to be rehashed, but that was another example of a conservative immigrant family taking pride in being here the legal way and being passionate about illegal immigration and topics that are adjacent to that.

Many of my republican friends voted no because it’s a trick question. Natural born only.
 
Just got busy in the voting booth.

Update from my Dem-heavy Charlotte precinct: No line at all at 1 pm, I walked right up to the check-in table. My ballot was the 402nd cast at the precinct today.

2020 census puts it at 48% desi. And yes, many are socially conservative. My son has an Indian friend who thinks that homosexuals are sub human.

While significant, not 70% yet. (I'm suret there has been an increase since 2020. Per the town of Morrisville:

In 2020, 36% of Morrisville, North Carolina's population was Asian Indian. The town's Asian population is 46%, and the town's overall population is diverse and affluent.

Morrisville's Indian population has grown significantly over time:

2000: 500 people in Morrisville were of Asian descent 2010: 4,415 people in Morrisville were of Asian descent, with about 60% being Indian

2019: 10,868 people in Morrisville were of Asian descent, with 80% being Indian
