I've lived a privileged life as a straight white Christian male. I was young during Vietnam, so the major events I've lived through would be 9/11 and COVID, with the recession from the housing bubble as a significant speed bump.

I say this to preface a thought I'm having: I don't think my trump-supporting family, friends, and acquaintances are Nazis, but what if they are ok with or if they even kinda sorta like fascism-lite? It has been so long since our country has faced a serious fascist threat. Maybe WWII is too far removed to be relevant to today's voters. Is trump's version of fascism not a deal breaker? Where does that leave us as a democratic republic?

I don't think there's any question that Trump's version of facism-lite (which I think is better compared to Orbanism in Hungary than anything) is acceptable to many Americans. Of course they would never agree that they're endorsing any sort of authoritarianism - in fact I'm quite sure they see Trump's preferred form of government as being more freedom-heavy than what came before. Which is objectively wrong, but you're likely never going to convince them otherwise. But the bottom line is that for most Americans, as long as the only people being thrown into unmarked vehicles and put in concentration camps are Hispanic and the camps themselves are out of sight, they're not going to be bothered enough to do anything about it. Nor are they going to be bothered by Trump extorting money from universities, law firms, etc, because they have a very limited understanding of what corruption really is and they see those places as more corrupt than Trump.

I’m already looking forward to Hillbilly Eulogy.
In the Age of Trump it has truly been anything goes, but if there's one thing I am increasingly certain of it's that JD Vance will never be Trump's successor. He's certainly smarter than Trump (who isn't?), but he has none of Trump's charisma, bluster, or ability to connect with working-class whites, even though he comes from that very group. Trump is a plutocrat with a powerful appeal to the white working class, Vance is a wannabe, socially upwardly-mobile yuppie who, unlike Trump, can't hide his contempt for his roots or his lifelong desire to leave them behind as soon as possible. He'll never have the kind of hold on MAGA Nation that Trump has developed, imo.

I am increasingly skeptical that there will ever again be elections for federal office in the sense of having an outcome not be predetermined by the current regime. I dont say that to be reactionary or overly paranoid. I just feel that the current path is one of escalating WTF moments that the public isnt prepared for.

The water that the frog is in keeps getting warmer, and the frog is in the "turn it up higher" cult.
