Three progressive Democrats ousted longtime Southern conservative incumbents in Tuesday’s Democratic primary for the North Carolina House, revealing
deep-seated frustration with party veterans who have sided with Republicans on immigration and other hot-button issues.

In the most closely watched race, in Charlotte, the Rev. Dr. Rodney S. Sadler Jr., a professor at Union Presbyterian Seminary, toppled State Representative Carla D. Cunningham. Ms. Cunningham joined Republicans in mandating that North Carolina’s local law enforcement officials cooperate with federal immigration agents, then said during a speech on the House floor that “all cultures are not equal.”
Also, in Charlotte, Veleria M. Levy, a public health consultant, defeated State Representative Nasif Majeed. Mr. Majeed cast the tiebreaking vote to mandate that the state recognize only two sexes, and giving parents more power over library books.
And in the rural northeast of the state, Patricia Smith, a minister and small business owner, unseated State Representative Shelley Willingham. Mr. Willingham cast the tiebreaking vote allowing private schools to arm teachers.…”
