This strategy is going to hurt his approval rating. The right move politically is to express condolences for the victims and wait for a different snafu to hit his DEI talking points.

Trashing DEI is popular with the majority of the American public but I don't think trashing DEI after 67 civilians and 3 servicemen die will be nearly as popular.

Trump launched air controller diversity program that he now decries

At news conference, Trump read a list of disabilities he calls disqualifying, but his administration started such hiring in 2019

“All qualify for the position of a controller of airplanes pouring into our country, pouring into a little spot, a little dot on the map, a little runway.”
— President Donald Trump, decrying what he called DEI standards imposed by previous administrations, Jan. 30

“…

Trump’s claim was repeated in an executive orderTrump signed Thursday that ordered a review of aviation safety: “During my first term, my Administration raised standards to achieve the highest standards of safety and excellence.”

That’s false. In his first term, Trump left the standards unchanged.

For air traffic controllers, the Obama administration in 2013 instituted a new hiring system that introduced a biographical questionnaire to attract minorities, underrepresented in the controller corps. The program was criticized, such as in a Fox News report in 2015, as making it harder for more skilled applicants to get hired as controllers.

But Trump, in his first term, left the policy in place, leading to a class-action lawsuit filed in 2019 by Mountain States Legal Foundation. The case was due to go to trial this year.

Moreover, the FAA under Trump in 2019 launched a program to hire controllers using the very criteria he decried at his news conference.
“FAA Provides Aviation Careers to People with Disabilities,” the agency announced on April 11, 2019. The pilot program, the announcement said, would “identify specific opportunities for people with targeted disabilities, empower them and facilitate their entry into a more diverse and inclusive workforce.”

The link under “targeted disabilities” is now dead, but the Wayback Machine retains links from June 2017 and January 2021 that show the page was unchanged during Trump’s tenure. …”

I vaguely remember the biographical test being causing a stir on the right back in the day and it looks like a lawsuit about it is still ongoing. However, the test itself was scrapped in 2016.

It does seem… counterproductive and nonsensical.

"As part of the revamp, the FAA disqualified several thousand applicants who had already gone through the Air Traffic-Collegiate Training Initiative and required them to achieve a passing grade on the biographical assessment first. Many failed, including lead plaintiff Andrew Brigida, who scored highly on the AT-SAT but couldn’t pass a test that rated candidates on whether they learned about air traffic control from a public notice, participated in multiple high-school sports, never went to college or were recently unemployed.

The test gave the highest points to people who reported being unemployed in the last three years, for example, with less if they reported having a job. It also gave high scores to people who said they were reluctant to express their views in a group, were more likely to be bothered by criticism of their performance and had less than three years of training in air traffic control. Candidates scored zero if they reported five or more years of formal training and got lower scores if they said their previous supervisor would describe them as accomplishing tasks quickly or if they said they started earning money after they were 18."

I hope this is true. He could have taken a page from a president with class:

It's would be nice if that were true

FAA Administrator Quit on Jan. 20 After Elon Musk Told Him to Resign

Michael Whitaker had only been in the role for a year but the SpaceX chief accused him of “harassment.”

"...Whitaker’s departure came after he clashed with Musk, who is now in charge not just of SpaceX but has been named by Trump as the head of the new Department of Government Efficiency, which is not technically a real government department.

In September Whitaker had proposed fines of more than $600,000 for SpaceX, prompting Musk to demand his resignation and promise to sue.

Whitaker, Space.com reported in September, told a congressional committee that the fines were “the only tool we have to get compliance on safety matters.”

But Musk had kept up the attacks on X, at a time when he was campaigning at Trump’s side. On Sept. 17 he accused Whitaker’s agency of harassment, posting, “The FAA space division is harassing SpaceX about nonsense that doesn’t affect safety while giving a free pass to Boeing even after NASA concluded that their spacecraft was not safe enough to bring back the astronauts.”

And in a reply to a tweet by an Australian YouTuber who posts videos about space and who has said the FAA “should not exist,” Musk accused Whitaker of standing in the way of his vision of putting human life on Mars.

“The fundamental problem is that humanity will forever be confined to Earth unless there is radical reform at the FAA!” he tweeted at Marcus House. ..."

well it did somewhat suck to be raised without mind controlling religions and politics since our society is so conditioned at young impressionable ages by at least one of the two by their parents....most likely by both. you think you are so smart and enlightened but you are as simple-minded as your cohorts in this country. you are in the very very large majority i will concede you that. truth hurts but you cant distinguish the truth because you are just another mindless controlled animal in our society.

This is so noxious. It's like they can't go a single day without trying to find a black person to scapegoat. When the ship hit the bridge in Baltimore, black mayor's fault. Or a black member of the port's board. Fires in California? Let's blame the black mayor. Airline crash? Let's blame unknown black people.

Anyone who goes along with this charade at all -- by which I mean referring to DEI as a cause of this when there is zero evidence that DEI played any role at all (and no, filling out biographical information on a job application has never affected anyone's morale at that job ever) -- should be utterly ashamed of themselves.

Yea, shit. Just straight blaming this accident on people of color.

Yikes. That's not a dog whistle any more, it's just a whistle.

Link: Products - Data Briefs - Number 450 - November 2022

One "Key Finding" - "After increasing between 2000 and 2018, age-adjusted suicide rates for non-Hispanic White people declined from 2018 (18.1 per 100,000 population) to 2020 (16.9), whereas rates increased between 2000 and 2020 for non-Hispanic Black (7.8) and Hispanic (7.5) people."

This is just me, but if I have my choice of pilots who are all equally qualified, the group that has a suicide rate half of what the white bros have looks like a good pick to me.

Took Trump all 10 days to kill 67 people, then blame on Biden. He deflected so quickly, I wouldn't be surprised to find the Blackhawk training mission somehow linked to him.

These people are just absolutely terrible at being decent human beings.
What the fuck are this person’s qualifications for her job?

If I were a reporter in room, I would be tempted to ask her the above question after running through the resumes of some of her predecessor’s.

It’s like the Barry Goldwater quote ( paraphrasing): “If I’m in a foxhole with another soldier, I care can he shoot straight not if he is straight.”
