As much as I can’t stand him, got to give Trump a ton of credit. He knew *exactly* how to capture and hold hostage an entire party, put it in a vice grip and clip their nuts off, and then did the same to an entire political system for a decade. Nobody has ever done that before and nobody will be able to do it again on either side. The problem is gonna be, though, that when the bill comes due for the party he took over, it’s not going to be Trump left holding the bag. It’s going to be all of the Republicans who don’t have his charisma, his style, and his ability to connect with the base. Trumpism without Trump isn’t going to be pretty for the GOP.

I’ll stand by my assertion that 2028 should yield a Democratic president post-Trump, as long as they are competent enough to run a candidate with fair skin, a Y chromosome, and a birthdate after 1970, for the exact reasons I stated above: the chickens of four years of disastrous economic policy, scandal, and corruption will come home to roost. If you were functionally literate, you’d have seen that pretty much every single one of us on this board has said that we are angry with the Biden administration for not releasing the files. (Also, dumbass, you were on this very thread saying that perhaps the Trump administration isn’t releasing the files because of national security implications. So if that is the case and that’s what you believe, seems to me like you’d understand why the previous administration didn’t release them. I know, it’s so hard to maintain consistency!)

Lastly, how does someone who graduated from law school (even a lousy one), gets admitted to the bar, and practices law for a career, not understand how toothless and devoid of meaning the unsealing of grand jury testimony and how extraordinarily unlikely it is in the first place that it can even be unsealed. Did you miss the “subject to court approval” piece? You think a “Democrat Activist Judge” in Manhattan is going to unseal grand jury testimony so that Donald Trump can try to score political points?

You are surely aware that a grand jury only determines if there is probable cause to prosecute a defendant. It does not render a verdict of guilt or non-guilt like a petit jury does. You are also undoubtedly aware that the grand jury transcripts are limited to what witnesses testified inside the grand jury room and are not inclusive of most witness statements. Most witnesses provide information through informal interviews or depositions, which are not part of the grand jury transcripts. What about the videos? Photographs? Sworn witness interviews? The emails? The text messages? The hard drives? None of that would be in grand jury transcripts. Why doesnt Trump want those released? (That’s a rhetorical question- everyone but you knows the answer.)

The premise of “Trump voters will never vote again after Trump is gone” is possible but by no means a sure thing. It reminds me of when people used to say Duke basketball would be nothing without Coach K.

When someone builds a machine/coalition as powerful as MAGA or what Coach K built at Duke, the game is forever changed and the future becomes a big question mark. How powerful will the machine be once the original architect of it is taken out of the equation? With Duke, the jury is still out to some degree but they didn’t just revert to 1970s Duke. The brand remains huge and top recruits keep flowing in for now.

There are a lot of blue collar Americans who are “MAGA” and love Trump for sure, but they also hate liberals. When Trump isn’t on the ballot maybe that’ll make them not vote. But there will still be liberals on the ballot to vote against. For me, it’s hard to picture the hardcore MAGA types I know just completely fading into the background and not voting in the future. We shall see.

There hasn’t been a POTUS election where Trump wasn’t on the ballot since 2012. The country has changed a ton since then. It’s just really hard to predict what the turnout will be in 2028 with any type of confidence, IMO.

We’ve got a sample size of election results that show what happens when Trump isn’t on the ballot- 2018 and 2022. It doesn’t go well for Republicans. We’ve got a sample size of what happens when Trump is on the ballot and the opponent is a white man. Trump and Republicans get waxed. We’ve got an even better sample size of what happens when Trump is on the ballot and the opponent is a woman and/or Black. Trump wins. Hence my position that without Trump on the ballot in 2028, and if the Democrats are halfway competent (big if) and run someone with fair skin and a Y chromosome, I think they stand a strong chance at winning, especially after four years of the spectacularly disastrous policies of the current administration.

Agreed, and unfortunately it appears that the Project 2025 people have succeeded beyond even their wildest hopes. In just six months they've gutted most federal agencies, many of them dating back to the New Deal, and which had functioned very effectively over the years at their assigned tasks and duties. Conservatives have been fighting the New Deal from the beginning, and after nine decades it appears they are perilously close to achieving their goal of just rolling it back. They are incredibly persistent and obsessed, even across the generations, I'll give them that.
