It’s also the damned names in A Memory Called Empire. I can’t keep the movers and shakers straight in my head, even with the glossary in the back of the book.

I get that 100%. One thing that SciFi/Fantasy books can drive you crazy with, names that are too made up and distant in spelling and pronunciation from names that we use in real life. I typically just gloss over the names in those sorts of books and not worry about what I’m missing, rather just getting the big picture stuff.
 
I do that a lot with fantasy. It drives my wife, who is naturally good at memorizing names, up the wall. I’d been mostly successful with that strategy in MCE, but ran into a series of pages that referenced a bunch of characters who had appeared briefly early in the book and I just stalled. Something about each character having a number at the beginning of their name just threw me for a loop. Got past those pages finally and picked up the rhythm again.
