Seems to me they would have loved it. No school!

Some podcaster had an interesting take on this issue. High school kids got fucked, but not as badly as dead old people. The problem, though, is that we had no national reckoning with those deaths and no valorization of the personal sacrifices made by, yes, teenagers who lost the "best" years of their lives.

That may well be part of it, but I also suspect that part of it is that 18 to 21 year olds are often still not in the job market, while 22 to 29 year olds are. And once that happens then it often becomes rather clear which party really gives a shit about workers, especially to anyone who is looking for a public sector job.
I went to a high school where the vast majority students’ parents were Republican (this was the early-90s, so we’re talking Country Club Republicans). Most of those students followed their parents’ lead on that. At least some of them have now changed political stripes. That said, many of those people I went to high school with now have kids in that 18-21 range. So many of those 18- to 21-year-olds polled have parents around my age. What’s up with that, Generation X?

My guess would be algorithm poisoning

I say this with all respect, but unless you have kids that age, you don't know. It sucked.
It did. But my kids learned that it was important to look after others and not just themselves. I believe they became better human beings because of the sacrifice. I love them for that. Obviously, not all experiences were like mine. I wish more had been. Maybe a lot fewer people would have died.

They get their news and form their views via TikTok.

100% agree. There are tons of amazing kids graduating from HS right now who have a heightened level of maturity that has prepared them to enter adulthood and change the world. But I will always be concerned that those are the 20-30%, and the rest have been deeply, hopefully not irreparably, harmed by the pandemic. I know my kids and most of their peers have an extraordinarily low level of trust for the political system, as they cannot reconcile what they actually experienced with the gaslighting that Trump, DeSantis, etc. have been relentlessly engaging in for many years.

I had two totally different experiences with my kids. It was really bad for my daughter who was a freshman in high school and it was great for my son who was in middle school. But they're both doing great now.

41% of likely voters in NC approve of Trump, while 56% disapprove of him. Too late now, though. Shouldn't have been a dumbass and voted for him last November.

Many of the 18-21 crowd, particularly males, are listening to Joe Rogan, Ben Shapiro and others who poison their minds with BS. Toxic masculinity that plays right into GOP propaganda
Yes. Lot of hate toward gay and trans people in that cohort. My son had a couple of friends who would say things like "gay people are subhuman and do not deserve to live." They are ex-friends for him. But that sentiment is out there.

Another problem is that the issues that have historically motivated liberalism among youth -- guns, climate change, debt -- basically ceased to be political issues for whatever reasons. A kid turning 18 might not have any clue about that stuff.

Strange but true

Or that this is an incredibly small sample size in one poll and people are overreacting.
In fairness, this isn't just one poll. The youth vote was hugely disappointing in 2024. Kamala barely won it. And it's reasonable to think that a part of that is the replacement of the 29 year olds who came of age during Obama's presidency in that cohort with new entrants who seem to be more Trumpy.

A person who was less than 10 years old in 2016 has basically no memory of American politics being even the slightest bit functional, or of a president who can lead the country forward, as inclusively as possible. Biden is underappreciated, but he was never a great leader and he was certainly not very good at it the last few.

As often happens, young people need to experience calamity before they will believe it can really happen to them. This coming recession and shitty job market might do something on that front.

I’m commenting specifically on the difference between 18-21 and 22-29. There are likely just a few respondents in the 18-21 category. You would need a much larger sample size across many polls to conclude any significance to this delta in this poll.
