I don't believe that his polling is trending upwards at all, and as the economy continues to struggle he's likely going to remain near his absolute possible low in the polls - that is, his MAGA base and nothing else.
He has had a few (relatively) good polls in December. I check the Nate Silver poll tracker fairly regularly and he has added 1.5 to favorability and subtracted 1.5 from his unfavorability this month, for a 3% total improvement.

As others have already said, 36% approval is disaster area numbers for any POTUS, even Trump. At the same time it's very unlikely that his numbers could fall much lower, as that 36% likely represents his core cult MAGA base that will never abandon him even if they lose their jobs, their homes, and their kids are starving and can't get medical attention because their Obamacare subsidies or Medicaid got cut. The problem for Trump and especially the GOP is that he's alienating just about everyone else - the other 60-plus percent.
