But Dylan Roof wasn't wearing a white hood and didn't have his official KKK membership card, he was just a troubled dude having a bad day right? No. They seem nothing alike.
This guy seemed to shift from being frustrated about his divorce and wanting to kill his family to having some dream about joining ISIS and deciding to kill people randomly on Bourbon Street.
Of course, I’m just basing that on the little bit that’s come out thus far.
I do. I also know that the Son of Sam killer was convinced that the neighbor's dog was telling him to kill. I expect this guy is in between but likely more toward crazy than fanatic.Do you understand the concept of a lone wolf terrorist? That's a major part of ISIS's game plan....to inspire people to commit acts of terrorism on its behalf.
A distinction without a difference.Itsbo understands the difference between an organization and an ideology.
Not everyone who ascribes to an ideology is a member of an organization which may share that ideology.
Again, no one said maybe it was part of the motivation. You said he was a member just because he said he joined them. I said just saying that doesn't make you a real member of ISIS. Either way there were other things going on like the divorce that seemed to make him do this, too.Once again, a major part of ISIS's strategy is to inspire people to commit acts of violence on their behalf. You don't need to be inducted into the club in order to be a terrorist. That's why they literally told people to drive into crowds, or attack people with machetes, and why they publish information about how to make explosives, etc.
There seems to be a haste by some to dismiss ISIS as a factor in this terrorist attack because this guy was mentally ill.
I take it back. You may not actually understand the difference, if you think that's not a distinction to be made.A distinction without a difference.
And easily exploitable by terrorist groups like ISIS.I do. I also know that the Son of Sam killer was convinced that the neighbor's dog was telling him to kill. I expect this guy is in between but likely more toward crazy than fanatic.
TDSTrumpers probably do.
Once again, do you think that ISIS issues membership cards? Charges an annual fee to join?I take it back. You may not actually understand the difference, if you think that's not a distinction to be made.
I declare myself a member of the 1982 UNC men's basketball team, then.
No need to go off track with much of a discussion about that here, but Dylan Roof was clearly a troubled dude. He also apparently, for a considerable period of time, consistently held white supremacist beliefs and committed the shooting motivated by those beliefs. But Dylan Roof wasn't wearing a white hood and didn't have his official KKK membership card, he was just a troubled dude having a bad day right?
This is exactly my thinking. No need to go off track with much of a discussion about that here, but Dylan Roof was clearly a troubled dude. He also apparently, for a considerable period of time, consistently held white supremacist beliefs and committed the shooting motivated by those beliefs.
Now I don’t know enough to come to any conclusion about this guy yet, but he voiced frustration about his divorce and discussed wanting to kill his family in a “celebration.” Then he discussed having a dream about joining ISIS, like he just had that dream and planned to join ISIS on a whim. Those reports suggest erratic behavior that does not involve much “political” or cohesive thought.
Sounds like this guy was radicalized over a period of years, not overnight. I saw one news story (I can't find it now) that quoted family as saying he had been obsessed with ISIS for the past year. And according to ABC,No need to go off track with much of a discussion about that here, but Dylan Roof was clearly a troubled dude. He also apparently, for a considerable period of time, consistently held white supremacist beliefs and committed the shooting motivated by those beliefs.

Until proven otherwise, I think we should assume he was a staunch Trump supporter. So a garden variety domestic abuser turned spree killer, and not actually ISIS.
