Best Band of the 90s?

Nobody knows how to pronounce Sigur Ros songs but them — they made up a whole f’ing language. Whereas Debaser is actually a very real word. And pretty much anybody who actually knows the band knows that word.

And the infamous “un chien Andalusia” line evolved from a previous iteration that had “Appolonia” in place of Andalusia. So he does indeed know the “right title” of the movie, and took poetic license to fit the artistic needs. But if I see him I’ll tell him there’s a pedant on a message board who says he didn’t use the “right title.”
I know why he didn't use Andalou. The song called for an extra syllable. Like I said, it's absolutely meaningless. I didn't say he was ignorant of the title; I just said that it's famous and people think that's the film's title because it was in the song. But that doesn't matter, as I said. And I did come up with the word; it just took me a minute.

That title is actually in Icelandic (the whole album is an opera based on Icelandic legend) but my point is that I don't try to remember song names. It's way, way more trouble than it's worth. Again, I used to listen to so much music at the radio station; someone had to review the albums that would come in so the DJs (who weren't always that committed) knew what to play. And we referred to the tracks by numbers in part because it was easier, and in part because the DJ doesn't care what the song is called; s/he cares what number track to queue up. I said several new albums a week but that undersells it -- some weeks it would be a dozen.

So when you try to accuse me of not knowing the music because I don't know the song names, it's both incredibly petty and misguided. I don't worship the bands you love -- so what?

Exactly! So consider moving along and stop trying to relentlessly convince others that they’re wrong for loving them. I don’t like the Foo Fighters so I made a joke about them a while back and moved on. That’s different than digging in and doggedly trying to yuck peoples yum the way you do. Especially when your argument has been reduced to “yeah but but but — more people cite the Velvet Underground and Ramones, and neither is all that good.” Where to even begin responding to that, jesus.

People who are a lot more notable in music history than you, seem to think they’re a pretty big deal. Some of us agree. You don’t, we get it.

Here's what I said. First, I made a joke how "best bands" threads always become something other than best bands. You took that as a criticism -- I explained that it was nothing more than a wry observation. Then I said the Pixies sound 80s to me, which is when they were actually making that music. That's not a criticism; that's just saying that I think they were perfect for their zeitgeist. At no point did I criticize anyone for liking them.

Then you came back with a comment about my overly tight left brain and how I didn't know what I was talking about because Cobain liked them. In response, I said I like the Pixies. I just don't think of them as particularly revolutionary.

As for telling you that you're wrong for loving them, I said nothing of the sort. In fact, I specifically suggested that it is a matter of taste -- i.e. that your opinion might depend on your priors. To you, perhaps, they sound feral at times. OK. To me -- someone who, as I noted, regularly listens to much heavier and intense bands -- it sounds pretty tame. How is that controversial? Do you think the Pixies are "feral" compared to, say, Slayer?

You are frequently very quick to jump on me with unmerited attacks, seemingly without regard for what I actually write. Your attack on me because of a song name -- when I explained it and then you still reiterated the nonsense point -- should be telling that you maybe you've jumped the shark here.
