Biorhythms for Carolina @SMU: 2:15 Start on CW

SMU played lights out. They might not play a better half all season than that 2H

It felt like Veesaar/Wilson didn’t have it early and that was indeed the case

Need to sort the backcourt situation out quick. 11 mins for Powell?

I'm wondering what a Trimble -- Powell -- Bogavac -- Wilson -- Veesaar starting line-up might do? That still leaves Stevenson open to cover the 4 and 5 as first man off the bench. I'm afraid it might bury Evans though because to my eyes Dixon ought to be getting more minutes. Of course some might say sub Dixon in for Bogavac in that starting five and that too might work well. Evans is a very careful ball-handler, precise even. His A to TO is 52/23. Bogavac is at 43/16 while Dixon is 32/12 (Powell is in at 15/6). Both Bogavac and Dixon tend to lose their man, turn their heads the wrong way, and are, IMO, the weak links regarding switches.

Did we shoot well or not?

You are the one trying to say we shot poorly.
I was speaking generally about how some fans will always chalk up a loss to either UNC not making enough shots or the other team getting hot and making more.

Please, be a little more pedantic for me.

Their guards were so much quicker than ours. We could not stay in front of them on D and they disrupted our ability to run our O through our bigs on the other side. Our guards will be our demise.

Oh, and as a team, we almost gave up 60. In the second half.
This was a game where switching seemed to really hurt. Also trying to double the big. When a team shoots 3’s like that, you can’t help off anyone.

Almost mirror image to the MSU game.

When we get down 8-10 late in the second half, we gamble a lot on defense. Against MSU and SMU, that resulted in the score getting out of hand in the last five minutes.
Combined with a couple of bad shot choices and they comeback down and keep hitting.

That really was the story of the game (and them making every shot they took).

They were really disrupting us getting into offense and we seemed to struggle figuring that out.
Carolina scored 83 points in 69 possessions. That's better than Carolina did against Florida State, Ohio State, Georgetown, Kentucky, Navy, and Radford. There's plenty that Carolina could do better, but there usually is. Wilson and Veesaar didn't have good games.

The story of the game was Carolina's defense was historically bad.

You don’t think their pressure on our guards disrupted the offense?

You might’ve missed that I also mentioned them making every shot they took.

I was surprised that they only hit 2 more 3’s than us. Seemed like more. I’d be curious the break down b/w first and second half efficiency and percentages.

Yes, I do think their pressure disrupted our offense. The defensive pressure of their guards was the first thing I mentioned about them in my pregame comment. Carolina was able to overcome that and had a good game offensively. Not great, but Carolina will normally win games when they score 83 points in 69 possessions.

None of Carolina's opponents had scored more than 74 points in a game this season. The story of the game was that Carolina's defense was historically bad.

Well, I tried to look at IC and several of the top threads were basically fire Hubert Davis. Regardless of my feelings on that, I feel like that’s a little premature.
Those threads do bring about an interesting, imo, question: What result(s) gets HD another year? Currently, according to Torvik, UNC is tracking comparable to a borderline top 25 team. Would a 20-25 final ranking and average postseason result for a team of that ranking be good enough to give HD another year? Does it, should it, factor in that this roster cost around 14 million dollars (top 10 cost)? I'm curious what folks here think is good enough for HD to get another year, given what we've seen now for this season?

I’m curious what people think here. When is it ok to fire Hubert Davis? He has to bottom out and have an 8-20 season? Is that what it takes?

IMO this has been a problem going back decades, no matter who the coach was — too much respect given to interior defense, and too little given to 3 pt defense. Couple that with sticking to their guns and hoping a team or a particular shooter will cool off (just because they’re supposed to statistically speaking), and that’s a bad combo for a game like today.

It’s old school strategy that too often backfires as shooting gets better and longer range.

Make them drive and finish in the paint over HV and CW, they can handle their own… stay at home everywhere else. Especially when a team is that hot.

I honestly don’t know what the people who actually call the shots would do if that scenario plays out. I do think it’s safe to say that the majority of fans would be hammering the table to see a change.

Big picture though we’re 13-2 and have a ton of season still in front of us. I’m willing to see how it plays out the next 2 months before treating every game like a referendum for the staff.
