Biorhythms for dook @UNC: 6:30 Start

Are you saying that this will go down as a great Carolina win in the Carolina-dook rivalry or are you saying it will be considered one of the 4 best games, from the Carolina perspective, in the Carolina-dook rivalry?
One of the top 4 wins in terms of "it ain't over til it's over"...

OK. It’s Super Bowl Sunday, so folks should have some time to ponder this. Let’s do it.

I think there can be zero doubt that 2022 UNC upset of dook in the Final Four is absolutely the pinnacle at this point.

Other Nominees for best UNC wins over dook in men’s basketball (I am limiting to games I actually remember):

  • 2026: Home - 71-68, Seth shot with 0.4 (only lead of game), double court storming
  • 2022: @ dook - 94-81, upset in K’s last home game
  • 2006: @ dook - 83-76, start of Hansbrough’s dominance at Cameron
  • 2005: Home - 75-73, Marvin Williams put-back / comeback game
  • 2003: Home - 82–79 upset (bloody lip Felton)
  • 2001: @ dook - 85-83 (foul hard call by Coach K)
  • 1996: Home - 73-72 — comeback from dook 17-point first half lead and 11-point second half lead, UNC trailed most of the game
  • 1995: @ dook - 102-100 2OT, Capel prayer, Stack dunk, etc.
  • 1992: Home - 75-73, Bloody Montross, undefeated dook
  • 1989: ATL ACC Final - 77-74 (a war with nearly 50 fouls called)
  • 1986: Home - 95-92, Dean Dome debuts with a thriller
  • 1984: Home - 96-83 2OT - Doherty forces first OT on Senior Day
  • 1980: Greensboro (Big Four) - 78-76
  • 1974: Home 96-92 (OT) — THE comeback
——
In making this list, I came to the conclusion that we have more heart-breaking losses in close ones in the rivalry overall, but the Final Four win papers over a lot.
There were TWO heart attack wins in 1974. The first match up on January 19 - @dook was a 73-71 walk-off (run off actually) on a steal and shot by Bobby Jones.

Maybe the Jabari Parker comparison is more apt.

I don’t mean to imply that Banchero is a total bust or anything and I know his numbers have been better recently, but overall I feel like he’s been fairly underwhelming and inefficient by the standards of a first overall pick. Honestly though I don’t follow the NBA super closely so that could just be an indictment of his overall situation with the Magic and his fit with their roster/coaching staff.
Eh. Banchero may be my least favorite dookie over the past few years, so I hate to stick up for him, but he’s pretty damn good. He was NBA ROY, averaging 20 ppg, 6.9 rpg, and 3.7 apg his rookie year. In his second year he was an All-Star averaging 22.6 ppg, 6.9 rpg, and 5.4 apg. He missed about half of last season with an injury, but averaged 25.9 ppg, 7.5 rpg, and 4.8 apg. And this season he’s averaging 21.7 ppg, 8.5 ppg, and 4.9 apg while playing on a solid Orlando team. His career averages as of now are 22.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg, and 4.7 apg.

Orlando has also generally improved since they drafted him, with the only notable decline occurring during the season he was injured. They went from 22-60 the year before he got there to 34-48 his rookie year, then 47-35 his second year with a playoff appearance. The year he was injured, they went 41-41, and this year they are currently 27-24 (7th in the Eastern Conference).

All that said, still can’t stand the dude.

I was limiting it to ones I recall and the comeback against dook in ‘74 is the very first basketball game I recall watching (I was 5, my brother was 13 months and my parents were trying to wait to change his diaper until after the game, which went terribly awry. My dad was mad UNC was losing and went to change an exploding nasty diaper, had to put my brother in the tub and my mom was yelling out the comeback details to my dad as it happened. I think all that made me focus for the first time in the details of a game so I could run back to tell him details during overtime while he got my brother toweled off and re-diapered. He didn’t get clothes on him otherwise until after the OT ended.)

A lot of Carolina fans have said that they find it hard to hate Scheyer after decades of hating K.

I wonder if last night was the first step in a lot of Carolina fans beginning to hate Coach Scheyer?
Those fans must not recall his playing days. King of the leg kick on three pointers to draw a foul by kicking the defender, among other things.

That's why I specifically said "Coach Scheyer". I couldn't stand him as a player, but I've been pretty neutral on him as a coach.

I remember being annoyed by how he handled things during the Filipowski-Wake issue, but I thought it might be a one-off. This incident suggests he's going to be a little bitch when dook loses and he can't handle it well.

Have to politely disagree. While a staple in the Scheyer repertoire, believe the undisputed King of the Leg Kick was JJ Reddick 😀

I hate 'em all for the decision that they made.

Of course some elicit stronger sentiments than others because of paying style and decisions.
