What would you think he should be willing to pay? Cadeau was (and still is) a project. I would have loved for him to have stayed but I wouldn't have emptied my pockets for him or made any promises about playing time or starts. Would you have done any of those?
 
I saw very little from Cadeau last year that would suggest he would be much of a net positive this year. He certainly didn't seem to have a very good attitude and his unwillingness to work on his game was probably not helpful in HD's estimation.
 
How badly y'all reckon Will Wade penalized that bencher that came into the game late and got a technical for taunting the UNC bench?

Give me experienced Lubin and Washington spelling ( replacing now ? ) Caleb and Henri under the basket
And give me a decent backup combo transfer guard.

Even I could compete coaching that team for a Final Four/National Championship with that lineup :cool:

A few comments...

First, I mean this as kindly & non-snarkily as I can say it; this isn't a fantasy league draft where you pick the players you want and they have to be yours. In order to get a player, you have to meet their demands and there are often trade-offs between players. Just because you'd like them to stay in CH and fit the role you have in mind for them, doesn't mean they have to agree and stay.

As far as Cadeau, you can't play him with Trimble because combined they are too small for a starting backcourt. Also, after 2 years in the system, he wasn't performing terribly well and, seemingly, either needed to be featured a bit more or he needed a new start elsewhere. Trimble wanted the ball in his hands a bit more if he were going to return, meaning more fit issues with Cadeau. The reality is that there was a Cadeau/Trimble decision that had to be made and HD chose Trimble. You're welcome to decide for yourself if you think that was a good decision. (I, personally, would have gone with Cadeau, absent any inside info that hasn't leaked.)

HD & the staff wanted Lubin back, he left because he didn't like his role and got a better offer. I would have loved for him to have stuck around for this year, but he didn't and there's not much HD could have done about that. Also, the trade-off for Lubin wasn't Stevenson, it was Veesaar. Lubin felt he'd earned a starting spot (or at least a major role) and when we were bringing in both Veesaar and Caleb, the writing was on the wall for him. Will Wade's idiotic comments aside, Lubin is a great 3rd option in the post, but you don't really want him playing more than about 15-20 minutes per game. He also can't really handle most PFs unless they're an undersized post like he is, so you've got to play him pretty exclusively at the 5. But, again, the staff wanted Lubin to stay and the biggest problem is that he got a better offer elsewhere.

Washington is a stretch 4, but he struggled a lot during his time at Carolina. He wasn't a direct trade-off with Stevenson (as Jarin is more a large 3/4 rather than a 4/5), but they do have some similar traits. The real trade-off here was likely Lubin vs. Washington as the primary backup big and HD & staff choose Lubin as the better option to pair with Veesaar & Caleb. There was simply put no way both of them were going to stay to compete with each other to be backup bigs, as shown by the fact that both of them ended up leaving. I liked Jalen while he was here, but he wasn't starter material and he wasn't really a great 3rd big option and so he was unfortunately expendable, especially when Stevenson wanted to come as a 3/4 instead of a 4/5 with a similar skill set.

I think pretty much every team in America would like to have a senior Tyler Nickel, the problem was that the choice Carolina faced was that a sophomore Tyler Nickel wanted an expanded role and the coaching staff didn't think he was ready for it. The trade-off here was likely sophomore Nickel vs Cormac Ryan or Harrison Ingram on the 2023-2024 team and I am pretty sure that HD made the right call there. Nickel's the kind of guy that we would have loved to have been willing to be a bench guy for a couple of years before getting more minutes as a junior/senior, but he wasn't willing to wait for that role. Again, you can want them but you can't make them stay and Nickel wasn't willing to stay.

In other words, your fantasy lineup is just that...a fantasy. In the era of the transfer portal where players have options, you simply aren't going to be able to keep kids who believe they can get a better role elsewhere (and are often correct in that belief) to be your 3rd/4th big or to be a non-featured player on offense.

If you want to criticize the player retention choices that HD has made, you're free to do that, but it needs to be done within the context of recognizing realistic trade-offs and plausible lineups.
