It’s all a matter of perspective. Also, it helped that during those years, Miami, YF, and FSU were each in different conferences.

If my family had the money, I’d have gone to UM and would’ve never had reason to root for UF or FSU.

But given that we didn’t have an extra 200k for me to attend UM, I went to state schools.

We lived in/around Gainesville throughout my high school years, and so it made sense for me to attend UF—despite the fact that I hated the Gators. But because I was then attending the school—and because they happened to be real fucking good in football, baseball, and to a lesser degree basketball—I of course went to games when I could and at least became a moderate fan whenever they played other SEC foes.

FSU was a little tougher to root for, given the bad blood between them and Miami. But my grad school experience there was fantastic, and I’ve got several life-long friends who I attended games with.
I went to grad school at USCe and I still hope they lose every game they play.

Did you have a good experience there, or did it suck? And how were their sports teams while you were there?

Way I saw it, UF and Miami were rarely in direct competition in those days—but both were perennial powers in multiple sports. When they’d meet in a bowl game or a baseball postseason matchup, I’d root for UM. Otherwise, I was cool if UF won their SEC matchups and non-Miami games.

That changed a bit when I went to FSU. All three were big in football and baseball, and FSU and Miami were in more direct competition on an annual basis. Still, it seemed easy for me to root for UM when they played each other, but to pull for FSU in years when Miami was down.

I enjoyed B-School a lot, both the academics and the people in my program. It was a great experience I have and will recommend to others.

But that didn't impact my opinion on the football and basketball teams. I was there during the Spurrier years and cheered against them (even in-person a couple of times). The basketball team won the second of back-to-back NIT championships while I was there and then stunk my second year, although I didn't go to any basketball games. I didn't really care about any of their other sports, but I didn't leave with any affection for them.

I'd pull for USCe over dook or State, because my hatred for those schools runs deep. But I pull for Clemson over USCe every dang year because as we all know, Carolina's in Chapel Hill and USC's in California and I want USCe to remember who their athletic teams actually are every year.
