I know yall hate Duke and that's cool. But what may go down, now between Duke and Miami (and I hope it does - I hope the lawsuit is fast and furious) could be landscape-altering for college football. And honestly, in a way that is desperately needed.
Miami just came in, paid $10mil, bought family a home or something, gave his sister a NIL deal, and are apparently acting like his current contract didn't have teeth (which apparently it does)? So Duke lawyers are already all over it. I hope it gets gross and ugly. Not because of us (Duke) but because college sports fucking SUCK and hell needs to hit hard
I have no problem with today’s college players getting as much cash as they can from the “system.”
Coaches and AD’s and numerous people affiliated with college teams and athletic departments have been cashing in for decades. The “adults” have been able to jump from team to team for years……with boosters paying the jumping fee.
Now that SOME players can take advantage of the “system,” supposed fans find it objectionable that players are cashing in and not “loyal” to the team.
FEW adults were loyal to the school. They were loyal to the paycheck - and few players were getting paid.
The “adults” fucked up college revenue sports (and the super elite levels of non-revenue sports) by ignoring the reality that the players deserved to be paid.
Remember when an Indiana basketball player was punished for appearing in a calendar? He wasn’t making a dime.
The “adults” tried to use things like the “national letter of intent” and the “sit out a year” transfer rule and a “two-year” sit-out rule for transfers within a conference to tie players to a given school.
Meanwhile, the coaches and athletic department staffs could freely move to greener pastures. After all, the coaches and athletic department staff could also be fired. But, so could players. A “national letter of intent wasn’t a 4-5 year contract. Most (all?) schools had a “waiver wire” for underperforming players.
We UNC fans were blessed with Coaches such as Smith, Guthridge, and Williams. They truly believed that signing a national letter of intent meant a player earned the privilege of earning a degree……so, signing an NLI was at least a 4-5 year deal and commitment between the players and the coaches. Who was that mediocre PF/C from Norfolk in the early-mid ‘’90’s? Ed Geth?
No one should be surprised at college players jumping from one $$$ deal to another. Coaches and AD’s have been doing so for decades. Lane Kiffen jumped from a national title contender (in the College Football Play-offs contender). Bill Self is paid $13 million? Belichick is paid $10 million. Shitty ass Mike Lombardi is paid $1.5 million……and, we pay another Lombardi and two more Belichicks…..
And, people think the players are fucking up the college game?
Remember when Coach K dangled leaving d00k for the Lakers to get a huge raise and a much bigger budget? The players couldn’t publicly do that in that era.
Now they can. Good for the players.
