Cruz: Gift of Qatari jet to Trump ‘poses significant espionage’ concerns

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (R) is warning that Qatar’s gift of a luxury Boeing 747-8 to the Trump administration to serve as the new Air Force One poses “significant espionage and surveillance problems,” a concern voiced by other lawmakers.

“I’m not a fan of Qatar. I think they have a really disturbing pattern of funding theocratic lunatics who want to murder us, funding Hamas and Hezbollah. And that’s a real problem,” Cruz said in an interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box” Tuesday.

“I also think the plane poses significant espionage and surveillance problems,” he warned. “We’ll see how this issue plays out, but I certainly have concerns.”

The value of the plane is estimated at $400 million, which Qatar’s royal family offered as a gift to the United States ahead of Trump’s first major foreign trip of his second term to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Trump has argued that only a “stupid person” would not accept the gift, but some experts and lawmakers are questioning whether it could be fully swept for eavesdropping or other foreign intelligence equipment.

Sen. Dick Durbin (Ill.), the senior Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, noted the plane’s extensive electrical system would be very difficult to check thoroughly for potential security vulnerabilities.

“It is completely negligent and, as far as I’m concerned, reckless to think that Air Force One where the president is asked to function as our commander in chief in a situation room, making life-or-death decisions, is on a plane given to us by a foreign government with 200 miles of wiring in it,” he said.

 
Plane's a non issue. It's just Trump thinking out loud. Qatar showed him the plane in Palm Beach; he loved the plane (I'm sure lot's of gold); they said take the plane as a gift Mr. President. He then goes and discusses the "possibility" of it without thinking it through. Also, Trump wants to light a fire under Boeing to get him the new AF1s.

“The FBI’s Washington Field Office is folding its federal public corruption squad, the same unit that aided Jack Smith’s special counsel investigation into President Donald Trump, three people familiar with the matter tell NBC News.

The field office has three units that work on public corruption issues, but this one — known internally as "CR15" — was deeply involved in the bureau’s "Arctic Frost" investigation, which was the precursor to the Smith probe into efforts to overturn the 2020 election results by Trump and his allies. That investigation resulted in one of the two federal criminal cases against Trump, both of which were dropped after his election.

FBI special agents assigned to the squad will be reassigned. A FBI official said the change was part of a broader reorganization at the Washington Field Office and that there would be additional changes to come — and that public corruption cases would still be pursued.

The move to shutter the unit comes amid a major shift of FBI resources towards immigration enforcement, an area that is primarily the responsibility of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which is part of the Department of Homeland Security. A top leader in the FBI’s Washington Field Office was also recently reassigned, two people familiar with the matter said. A FBI official said the person was not reassigned for any adversarial reason….”

Great post. And the thing that stands out in all 24 quotes is these comments are not about policy disagreements. That happens in every administration. These comments speak to trump’s character (or more accurately, the lack there of). I really would like our trumpers to speak to this.

Note that, other than Rhodes, none of them said anything about the wisdom. They are actually concerned that Trump moves so quickly, as that means he is being unconstrained by factors that should constrain him.

I know you love the idea of Trump doing stuff. He's got energy and you like that. Most people do not praise action unless it is good action.

Were you around for the UNC/Loyola Marymount NCAA tournament game? Boy did Loyola Marymount play with a lot of energy. Full court, five man press every possession. UNC won by 30 and that was after easing off the gas. Energy without wisdom is not a good thing.

"The cult of action for action's sake", which dictates that action is of value in itself and should be taken without intellectual reflection. This, says Eco, is connected with anti-intellectualism and irrationalism, and often manifests in attacks on modern culture and science.
