“… A senior White House official said Trump wasn’t happy about Musk’s decision to lambaste his signature legislation, describing the president as confused as to why the Tesla chief executive decided to ratchet up his criticism after working so closely with the president for four months. The official said senior Trump advisers were caught off guard by Musk’s latest offensive.

The uneasy alliance between the two men was also strained by a recent move by the White House to nix Trump’s nominee to run NASA, Jared Isaacman, according to people familiar with the matter. Musk, a close ally of Isaacman, had advocated for him to get the job.

The decision infuriated Musk, who complained to associates over the weekend that he had donated hundreds of millions of dollars to help get Trump elected in last year’s campaign, only to see Isaacman’s nomination pulled, a person with direct knowledge of the matter said. Musk’s frustration over the NASA episode made him more willing to aggressively criticize the tax bill, people close to him said. Musk didn’t respond to a request for comment….

Asked whether Trump and Musk continue to have a strong relationship, a White House official said it was too soon to tell. The official said that Trump could be forgiving, but that he doesn’t forget slights like this.

Even before the billionaire’s ramped-up attacks on the tax bill, some Trump allies worried that Musk would feel more free to criticize the administration after he left the White House. Some administration officials encouraged lawmakers on Capitol Hill to post positive social-media posts thanking Musk for his service out of hope such praise could avoid future confrontations, according to people familiar with the effort.

Musk has long harbored frustrations with the tax bill, raising concerns about provisions in the legislation that repeal tax credits for electric vehicles, people close to him said. Musk’s car company, Tesla, is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of electric vehicles. He is also the founder of SpaceX, which has government contracts with NASA. Isaacman has ties to SpaceX, including flying on the company’s first private flight to orbit.

White House officials privately dismissed Musk’s criticisms, arguing that he was focused on his business interests rather than the public interest.…”

Biden’s I.R.S. Doubled Audits on the Wealthy, Data Shows​

At the same time, the audit rate for those making under $500,000 declined slightly in 2024, fulfilling a promise by the Biden administration.

But new data released by the I.R.S. last week suggests that the agency upheld Mr. Biden’s promise in 2024. With an audit rate of 0.8 percent, people making over $500,000 on their latest return were more than twice as likely to be audited compared with the same point in the audit cycle in previous years.…”

… A DHS agency official told ProPublica Fugate was “temporarily” offered a CP3 leadership role for his “work ethic and success.”…”

I thought from the beginning that they would eventually have a serious falling out for that very reason. Although Trump isn't smart enough to do it, I also wondered if some in Trump 2.0 saw Elon as a useful tool to make the Project 2025 cuts they wanted and he could take all the heat and was thus expendable. Unfortunately their falling out isn't going to help matters much, as Elon actually wants even more drastic cuts to the budget than Trump or Congressional Republicans (hard as that is to believe) and so he may be even worse, if that's possible, than Dear Leader. It's not like he's going to become a useful ally (or even just a Trump enemy) for Democrats - if Elon's plans are enacted they'll make things even worse for average Americans than Trump probably will, as incredible as that sounds.

Maybe, and …

The possibility exists that Elon is persuadable by nature if his exposure to the gross economic market, whereas Trump has completely insulated himself within the global elitist kleptocracy and kakistocracy. Trump no longer needs to sell a single widget - corruption is his very obvious business. Elon obviously doesn’t need to sell more widgets, but it’s fairly clear the destruction of the Tesla brand has had significant impact on his psyche.

To be clear, I don’t think Elon is some sleeper cell. I also think the horrid reputation of doge has left him confused, wandering, and wondering. Yes, he likely would do more grievous harm to social programs, if he got his druthers, but I think Dems should seek to leverage every viable wedge.

Elon has seen his personal brand absolutely tank, alongside the companies that define him. Tesla sells vehicles and battery systems very much within financial reasonability for millions of middle class people - I think he’s finding out he can’t demonize and financially target them and their values, and maintain the base of customers that made him (well, and the billions in subsidies).

Is there really such a conversation or are Dems just delighted to amplify Musk’s complaints about the BBB? Seems like mostly the latter from what I’ve seen (Ro Khanna has remained a pretty steadfast Musk cheerleader even during DOGE).
