Cambodia Agrees to a Reduced Tariff and Breathes a Sigh of Relief

Initially 49%, it was lowered to 19%, easing worries of a damaging hit to the country’s garment and footwear production industries.

“… “I’m going to express our appreciation to President Trump and to the U.S.,” said Mr. Sun Chanthol, who has led multiple rounds of negotiations with the United States….”

Appeals Court Allows Trump Order That Ends Union Protections for Federal Workers

A famously liberal circuit court ruled in President Trump’s favor, authorizing a component of his sweeping effort to assert more control over the federal bureaucracy.

“…
The unions had also argued that the order broadly targeted agencies across the government, some of which had no obvious national security portfolio — including the Department of Health and Human Services and the Environmental Protection Agency — using national security as a pretext to strip the unions of their power.

The panel sidestepped that claim, writing in the 15-page ruling that “we question whether we can take up such arguments, which invite us to assess whether the president’s stated reasons for exercising national security authority — clearly conferred to him by statute — were pretextual.”

The order, they continued, “conveys the president’s determination that the excluded agencies have primary functions implicating national security.”…”

probably another stunt among friends...

Trump : Vlad, I am really getting hammered on the Epstein hoax and nothing I have tried has turned the media away. So I need your help. I'm thinking maybe raising the threat of nuclear war with Russia might be a shiny object for the media to chase. I'm thinking maybe moving some of our nuclear subs a bit closer to you would do the trick. What do you think ?

Putin: Donald, I have been helping you for 10 years because it has helped you and it has helped me. I'm willing to allow you to do this, but only for a week two. If the subs are still there after two weeks, then I will have to respond to save face

Trump: no problem I will pull back immediately if our media doesn't take the bait and make this a story and I will certainly pull back by the end of next week

Putin : As usual, I think we have another great deal. I will not comment on your move before the end of the week

Trump: Thanks, Vlad you're the best. By the way What do you think of me firing the head of the BLS for publishing facts that I don't like ?

Putin : If it had been me, I would have pushed her out of a window or poisoned her...but you do you

Trump : LOL. We are are getting there, but that would be a bridge too far at this time. I'm still catching heat about Epstein's "suicide "

So, I've been working really hard recently to make sure I'm not just reflexively opposing everything Trump does. That's not fair, and it puts me in the same category as the people who reflexively defend everything he does. So here's my contribution for today, keying off the current events thread that has been locked.

The White House complex should have a ballroom/large gathering space. Trump is right about that. It's ridiculous we've had to host governmental events in tents. The White House has plenty of land. Adding a very large gathering space befitting our place in this world is well worth it.

I don't even care if taxpayer funds are used to pay for it. We're not a podunk banana republic and we should be able to pay for things that convey an appropriate image to the world.

I really hope Trump doesn't do gold-plated toilets and shit like that, but this is a good thing for the country. And I'll give Trump credit for it if he can get it done.
This is an activity we should all undertake.

We shouldn't simply be against everything trump.

“…The Trump administration still values the U.S.-India partnership, officials say. But ties between Washington and New Delhi have steadily soured over disputes about trade, Russia and whether Trump deserves credit for brokering a cease-fire following a four-day conflict in May between India and its rival Pakistan.

… Trump, current and former officials said, is deeply frustrated by the lack of progress with New Delhi.

A point of contention in tariff negotiations is the U.S.’s push to open India’s agricultural markets, which employs over 40% of the country’s workforce.

Opening up the sector, which has long been protected by New Delhi, would anger India’s farmers, a powerful voting bloc. That presents a perilous political risk for Modi, who abandoned an effort in 2021 to deregulate the agricultural sector after facing nationwide protests from farmers.

…Trump posted on social media that his team brokered a deal that led to a cease-fire on May 10. Pakistan embraced the announcement, praising Trump and nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize.

India, by contrast, bristled at Trump’s assertions and insisted no outside power dictated the cease-fire. India’s insistence that the U.S. role was overblown has privately angered Trump, who has told aides he’s upset with Modi for not thanking him.

…Trump strained ties even further by offering to mediate the longstanding Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan.

That was embarrassing for India. India has always rejected the idea of third-party mediation, something that Pakistan has always sought,” said Lisa Curtis, a former senior National Security Council official who oversaw South Asia policy in Trump’s first term.

“If there had just been one or two tweets on May 10, the two sides could have recovered from it. However, Trump has talked multiple times about the U.S. bringing about the cease-fire.”…”

In announcing that the U.S. would place 25% tariffs on Indian goods, Trump also criticized India for purchasing large quantities of Russian oil. India has taken advantage of discounted oil prices from Russia after many Western countries stopped buying or curbed their purchases. In the last quarter of 2024, India accounted for one-third of Russia’s oil exports, according to ORF.

“It is most certainly a point of irritation in our relationship with India—not the only point of irritation,” Rubio said in a Fox News interview on Thursday. “With so many other oil vendors available, India continues to buy so much from Russia, which in essence is helping to fund the war effort and allowing this war to continue in Ukraine.”…”

——
The Biden Administration was eventually convinced by India that India buying Russian oil and gas at the EU capped price actually benefitted US goals by keeping international oil prices lower, getting Russia to accept a lower price than they would get on the black market (so reducing oil profits to Russia which Russia was willing to do for fixed demand and lower delivery risks versus black market sales) and benefiting India as a competitor to China for U.S. imports.

Whether those are the correct trade-offs or not, I do not know, but the Trump Administration is doing an about face on US policy on India buying Russian oil. It is also interesting that the Trump Administration is cozying up to Pakistan, which is consistent with their warm relations with Muslim and Islamic countries in the Gulf (excluding Iran).

Who else is in the running this year for the Peace prize? Should be a no brainer.

Trump's approach to journalism is pretty much on the NY Post, National Enquirer level. Verifiable facts, data, objectivity and certainly not professional journalism or serious-mindedness matters at all. All that matters is how relentlessly they praise him and everything he does or says 24/7, and is it written on his level, which means pretty much for five-year-old boys with the attention span of a fly. That WSJ front page is beyond his reading comprehension and likely contains nothing that would interest him. OTOH, the NY Post page with the huge photo of attractive women, a mention of sex, and a story of how "Wokeness" got a TV series cancelled is virtually guaranteed to draw his attention.
