“I’m not mad! Gavin Newsom doesn’t bother me! I don’t even dislike him even though I think he’s a Marxist commie who runs California like Mao! He’s not even funny! Nobody even knows what he’s doing outside of the online libs!” he says, as he continues to whine about Gavin Newsom after watching clips on Libs of TikTok.

What they'll see is that the article is discussing why there really can't be a liberal MAGA, not expressing concern that will happen.

Second, your post was about comments allegedly made on Morning Joe by "Dem operatives," not about an Axios article.

I watch Morning Joe to get an early read on what the Dems’ message and/or attack for the day will be. It’s highly coordinated with the AP/NYT/Washington Post/NPR leading the way.

I agree that it's not inherently funny when either Trump or Newsom do it.

I disagree that it's not hilarious when Newsom does it and MAGA loses their damned minds over it. Like a lot of meme humor, the twisting of context is where the humor comes into play and Newsom's PR folks are doing an incredible job with this.
 
Newsom’s team is doing an incredible job of highlighting the rank absurdity of Trump. That’s why a few of the memes are quite funny (most are just internet drivel) - they expose, in a self aware fashion, the absolute ridiculousness and tough guy facade of the carnival-barker-in-chief.

Newsom’s team is drawing attention to a messenger, and it’s working. It’ll likely stop working by year’s end, as liberal minded people get tired, rapidly, of even the perception of punching down and particularly get tired of predictability. Eventually, a meme will make fun of maga cult members and liberal empathy will go “ok, stop it”, and the predictable AI bullshit will end up becoming trite. Draw conclusions about the differences between liberal minded people and maga, as you will.

Anyone who thinks Newsom’s team is posting with even 1% earnestness (as oppose to Trump posting absurd AI slop with 99% earnestness) should have their political analysis summarily dismissed for the remainder of their lives. Anyone doing it on tv is doing it for clicks/engagement and/or shaping a narrative (see Perino).

Also, stop watching cable news. Read. I don’t know a single person - literally - who watches Joe Scarborough.

The problem?..... the liberal media has been highlighting the "rank absurdity" of Trump for nearly a decade and it's accomplished literally nothing.

On the right/ center-right, Newsom is viewed as a mega liberal, entitled, uppity California boy, while Trump has convinced half the country that he is "one of them". How he pulled off that illusion is anyone's guess, but Newsom's opinion likely carries little to no weight with anyone except those who already know Trump is absurd.

The hilarious part is that it’s quite literally the very thing that Trump does. He spends his morning watching Fox and then tweets out his attacks based on what grievance Fox reports about. Does anyone actually believe that Trump knew who Sydney Sweeney was before Fox complained about her getting “cancelled?”

Everything is projection with these clowns. Every complaint is an admission.

I think the answer is a heck of a lot more simple as to what Newsom is doing. He’s antagonizing Trump/MAGA for the purpose of getting under their thin skin to cause even more absurd and erratic behavior. And it’s clearly working- see no further than how dyed in the wool MAGAts like ramrouser and right wing media dorks like the ones on Fox News are getting agitated by it. Tim Walz struck the right cord when he called all of these MAGA dweebs weird and then inexplicably was forced to drop it right as it was clearly getting under the skin of the right wingers. Walz was good at it, but he was also kind of your nice guy uncle type, so this kind of trolling is even more highly effective coming from a slick haired, conventionally good-looking, liberal Democrat from the Marxist communist socialist hellhole of California.

Liberal media has merely stated the obvious in critical and intellectual tones and language. That doesn’t break through because people expect that exact response from liberal thinkers. No liberal pol has had the guts, absurdity, or lack of self respect to do what Newsom is doing. Turns out, Newsom simply realized and had the gall to say “Americans don’t give two shits about self respect and decorum anymore. Fuck it, let’s ride assholes!”

I think the vast majority of Americans can identify with being a billionaire from a wealthy family with a bad spray tan and combover, who decorates everything in gold and squarely fits the stereotype of the loudmouth New Yorker.
