I guess I'm trying to understand the reasons someone votes for him in a primary given his pretty dismal record in CA. I get voting for him in a general election vs whoever the republican candidate is. But of all those on the dem side, he would be the last one I would vote for in a primary. 2nd to last if kamala was in the primary. He is smart, has charisma, and is a player in the party. But those traits didn't aid his actual performance in CA. If he was a college football coach based on his record he would likely be fired and not someone people would likely want at UNC.
Without copying and pasting from some conservative blog, what is your biggest gripe about his record as governor?

Eta: I posted this before seeing your link to the WSJ opinion piece or your quick overview of gripes. The fact that you referenced net migration was enlightening, but I would appreciate if you are able to respond to my question above.

Not all red states are sucking hind teet, TX Tenn, maybe Fla. Georgia (purple State maybe?)

NC - a purple state by most measures gets more than we send in, but thats probably because of all the federal/military presence. We get a ton of federal $ here for that reason alone.

A state with a larger population but with little or no federal/military presence will usually look like a donor state regardless of red/blue/purple.

I'm Ok with Gavin being a professional troll.
He’s definitely top notch at mocking trump but mocking is not necessarily being a troll. Trolls drop turds in the punch bowl and then run away. Gavin ain’t going away anytime soon.

GOD BLESS GAVIN NEWSOM, OUR NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! Finally a president with real family values that will work hard for hard-working everyday Americans, get our economy humming again, bring back law and order, take care of our veterans, bring back science and doctors’ expertise to make America healthy again, restore global respect for America, and put an end to hate and divisiveness. A president for ALL Americans! I can’t wait. 🇺🇸

The vast majority of people who think California is a failing state and that Newsom is a terrible governor have never been to California.
The vast majority of MAGA have never been to any of the places they think are hellholes. The idea that DC is now safe and you couldn't walk around before the military was deployed as Trump said is so absurd that it's hard to understand how stupid you have to be to believe it. I took my family on a vacation to DC this past Spring and according to my wife's Apple watch we averaged a little over 7 miles walking per day. We used the metro to get around as well and ate at over a dozen restaurants. Never once did we feel unsafe. It's constant stream of total and complete bullshit.

That’s not true…a good number of them probably spent an extended weekend in SF or LA and saw all the tourist traps once when they were in their 20s.

Some of them did I'm sure. But I think we underestimate the number of Americans who never travel more than two counties from home.

I have a good friend who moved from NC to CA in 2004. He lived in Sacramento for the first 3 years and has lived in San Francisco since 2007.

He comes from a very politically conservative family (his older brother— who is a very nice person when you’re around him in person— used to post on IC and posted some bat crazy shit, getting banned at one point and then came back and continued posting bat crazy shit). His father passed away a couple years ago, but I don’t think he ever went out to visit him in CA. His mother visited him for the first time several years ago, and that was the only time she visited him there until he got a recent cancer diagnosis. I think they were reluctant to visit because they thought it was such a hellhole.

He told me that when he comes home for the holidays and mingles with family members, they can’t believe he’s able to survive in SF and assume it’s some type of war zone with criminals, homeless people, and antifa attacking people, pillaging, and burning everything down.

I did go out there to visit him in April, and everything was lovely there. I survived just fine.

I’m pretty sure that most Southerners live more than 2 counties away from Gatlinburg and/or Myrtle Beach.

I don't know the accuracy of this chart. Most of what I have seen is that there are about 13-15 states that send more tax dollars than they receive in benefits. This chart is doing something weird. Here's the usual diagram.

As the chart shows, the economy is mostly CA, WA, NY, IL and MA propping up everyone else. A few states are displayed as donor states (Utah, for instance! and MN) but my guess is that their balance of payments is pretty close to zero. Also CT and NJ -- hedge funds and hedge fund managers pour a lot of money into federal coffers; even if they are taxed regressively, they make so much money.

1. When you say, "probably because of military spending" -- what do you mean by that? Military spending is a cause of imbalance for a lot of states. After all, military spending is one of the biggest line items in the federal budget.

2. It's not really population. It's cost of living. The reason that states like Illinois and Washington and New York are donor states is the cities.

You know how people say, "earning $80K in SF is really like earning $60K in Charlotte"? I don't know the exact numbers but you know what I mean. Well, those two salaries are not the same for federal tax purposes. The $80K pays more in absolute terms and as a higher percentage of income. So places with high costs of living -- i.e. cities -- are going to be the donor states.

The other determinant is whether a state supports ultra-high value-added businesses. A hedge fund can make $10B a year while employing 50 people maybe. A Silicon Valley company can make astronomical amounts of money without an astronomical work force because the companies' products scale close to free, other than generation costs.

Relatedly, businesses like financial services and computer tech don't import much from other states. So their revenue stays home. It isn't flowing to steel mills in other states.

Trolls don’t go away. We have several on this board - some with multiple names.

Of course. I get all that. Re: #1 and NC… we are a taker State in the statistical data. We have a ton of military presence. I say “probably” because if you take away all of the military presence, I’m guessing the scale balances out a bit more in terms of taxes we send vs. the money we get back.

Re: #2 I’m not saying it’s all “just population” that is the cause of one state being a donor and another is a taker… I’m saying it “just is”. The most populated states tend to be donors and the less populated tend to be takers. Regardless of cost of living or average earnings per capita. It just is.

There are exceptions of course. Massachusetts being one... But let's not de-rail the thread further by discussing donor vs taker states. This thread is all Gavin Newsom:

Chef's kiss

I actually think I should probably start talking about him like that, for real
