I would say 90% of my property is that. But it's also not feasible for backyard use with kids and pets and stuff

And let's face it .. Stilt grass is just going to take it all over anyhow

What kind of grass do you have? Whatever you have…and I know this goes against everything you stand for…search for the NC State ‘type of grass here’ calendar. If that hurts too much, Clemson also has them…and so does UGA…all free online. I use the Clemson one for my Bermuda and it has not failed me. I also send in soil samples for testing every spring. Tells you how much of everything to apply and when to apply it. Guides tell you how much to water, how high to mow…the whole nine yards. Has worked like a charm for me. Good luck!!

Do you use a commercial soil test? I saw some for sale at Lowe’s but opted to just try lime and fertilizer without testing first. Now my seeds don’t seem to be germinating, so I’d like to do a test before the fall.

I send samples to Clemson for testing…really easy to do and pretty cheap (less than $10). Results come back in a week or two. Results are very specific, telling you how much lime, fertilizer, or other supplements to add and when to add them. Link below should tell you everything you need to know. Mowed the lawn today for the first time this year.

I love working outside and doing yard work. Unfortunately, I am being mentally challenged in not being able to do anything while I'm recovering from my Achilles surgery. I've had to hire a lawn service to do one mow. Hopefully, I'll be able to walk again soon to avoid having to use them too many more times.

I had Bermuda sod laid in 2020 in the back yard and 2021 in the front yard. The same company has been servicing my lawn monthly for treatments.

In July, they applied the wrong chemical which burned my grass immediately. In August they offered to topdress the lawn for free to help it recover. It did not help much and they offered regular treatments for free until this spring when it would return to normal.

Now that my neighbors lawns are greening up, parts of my lawn look like grass was never there.

Just emailed the most recent pics to my lawn care company to get their opinion. Should they be on the hook for new sod or am I SOL?

Oh fuck. It will recover.... But not this year. You are looking at maybe 3 years. And in that time, weeds galore

I would absolutely demand new sod... And then offer to pay to upgrade to zoysia

Yeah. That is rough especially if you're paying a professional. I would ask them to resod. When they say no, try to come up with some compromises. Maybe credits or additional labor to get it where it needs to be.

I wouldn't trust a lawn company that made that kind of mistake.

I would aerate and add a good soil mixture. It's going to take some time for that to recover.

I thought my mulch front and sides would be easier than grass. Nope. WAY more work.
Weeds get all in those rocks in the southeast and they are a pain

Been there done that. And then it rains. But yeah it works for awhile. I had the weed killer attached to my hose and sprayed all the rocks with it. Then I gave up and paid the illegals to do my yard work.

My house has gone through at least 3 previous owners since it was built in 1995, and the natural areas have both a layer of landscape fabric and a sheet of black plastic below that. But over time the pine needles and leaves have broken down to create a thin layer of soil on top that weeds still thrive in. So I’ve got to pull weeds anyway and it’s a massive pain in the ass to cut through cleanly if I want to plant something.

I’m seeking advice. I have fescue in my backyard but it’s a lot of work (weed treat, aerate, overseed and water every year). We neglected it a few years not doing all that and it’s now it’s 80% winter weeds that go dormant in summer so it all looks awful . I’d like to replace it with a grass that spreads and doesn’t require overseeing yearly. It’s too large for zoysia (my front yard zoysia looks great). I can’t afford the sod in the larger back yard. It’ll have to be overseed. It’s partial Sun.

I stopped using the landscape fabric for the same reason.

I recall at my old house, finding the fabric 8-10 inches down after several years of the mulch decaying.
