Going after Greenland

Acquiring Greenland would be amazing for the US. Doing it by force would be an impeachable offense to me but if we could buy it, we absolutely should.

Greenland has the highest alcoholic rate per capita in the world. They have the highest suicide rate per capita in the world.

If Trump had approached them differently and told them about how the deal would make their lives better it might have worked out but he’s an idiot so he ruined any chance of that.
I’m guessing their rates of alcoholism and suicide are extremely similar to Alaskans, so it’s not like becoming Americans is a solution to those problems.

I hope I never need to hire you as a lawyer!

Now I know what you look like. Only you could think that ripped-out-of-context AOC quote would be used in a courtroom ever.

I can't believe I have to further specify, but here we are. In the context of consent, no means no.

Why do you think Greenlanders are ignorant and uneducated? They are perfectly well aware of the United States. They know what America is like. They don't want to be part of it.

Just because Trump can pull the wool over your eyes doesn't mean he can do it to anyone.

The idea that Trump could show up with travel brochures and be like, "it's awesome" and Greenlanders would jump at the chance -- I mean, are you serious? What about Greenlanders makes you think they are so silly?

And if they had any interest in joining, they certainly don't now after Trump has been disappearing people.

My post was actually two separate thoughts. The first being in regard to a lawyer just giving up when told no.

The second was AOC.

Are you under the impression we are talking about a date? You seem very passionate about no means no. Period. No negotiation.

When talking about a hostile takeover of another nation whose populace wants absolutely no part of the United States, no absolutely means no. What the fuck else is there to say? Anything beyond that is an open act of war.

Right and I don't in any way support invading or any military action, but a country of 50k has to be under the jurisdiction of someone. They have no currency, no meaningful federal government. If we can negotiate with Denmark to take over that responsibility, what's the issue?

I could be wrong. In 5 years from now, which countries, other than Russia, China, Greenland and maybe Denmark are still going to be pissed off?
History has proven many times that countries and people have long memories. If the US moves to forcibly take Greenland the rest of Europe will neither forgive or forget. Plus, it will just make other European countries distrust trump even more than they do now (if that is possible).

Denmark has made it plain that they have no interest in such a thing and it is patently insulting to publicly pursue this nonsense against an ally.

I suppose you think it would be totally appropriate for someone to publicly proclaim they were going to sleep with and take your wife? After all, what's the harm if they can get agreement?

Canada, the EU and the UK are fed up. Their new alliance is strong and they’re not taking anymore BS. Trumps American isolationism is going to bite him in the arse. Nobody needs the U.S. anymore. They’re all moving on together without us. Japan will be on board next, along with a host of other democratic nations. They’re simply saying “no” to the oligarchs and fascist authoritarians.

Just like Greenland said. “No”. What part of no don’t you understand JD? Trump? Putin? Y’all can fuck all the way off.

The UK is largely finding ways to cower in the corner and try to go unnoticed as they have largely burnt their trade bridges. It's not as bad as it was before, but you can still walk into a grocery store in the middle of fucking Notting Hill and see empty produce shelves because of the damage Brexit did to trade. Starmer's main reaction to Trump burning down the US-global relationship has been to say "No, we won't use reciprocal tariffs and please have a state visit, I know how you love those."

The Labour party is busy cutting benefits on everything from disability to education as they deal with just how fucking broke they are after the Tories burnt down everything and the public is incensed and will just run back to the conservatives in revenge (if not further right wing.)

Scores of English councils could go bankrupt when hidden Send debt reappears

Reeves could tax pensions and wealth if economy worsens, says IFS

It's so, so stupid, and I worry that the same thing will eventually happen here. Assuming we are actually allowed to elect a Democratic administration and Congress sometime in the near future, I worry that they will also inherit a god-awful mess (much worse than Biden or Obama inherited) and the GOP's gutting of the government will leave Democrats holding the bag and trying desperately to fix the mess Trumpers left behind. And of course you know that Fox and right-wing media will have a field day blaming Democrats for whatever misery results, and for not fixing the mess Republicans created quickly enough. That already happened to some extent with Biden's term of office. Brexit - aided and abetted by Boris Johnson and Conservative governments in general - fucked the UK royally, but it's Labour that's left holding the bag and paying the price. And so who will UK voters likely return to to "fix" the problem conservatives created? Conservatives. It's madness.

People, at their core, are stupid selfish animals who (as a whole) have benefited greatly from the exception to the common member of the species.

Oh, make no mistake, the Brits are fucked - and the Tories did it - and the EU has no problem moving on, trade-wise, without the UK. And the EU has no problem moving on from both them and the U.S. in that regard.

But what I mean by adding the U.K. in with Canada and EU is in response to Putin (and by proxy Trump and the US) in regards to NATO and Ukraine. The UK is on board with Macron, the EU and NATO in backing Ukraine. I don't mean to lump the UK in with the EU in terms of trade agreements. That horse left the barn with Brexit, we all know that. But I did include the UK in the anti-Russian/Pro Ukraine alliance.

I used to live over there, and I still have tons of friends over there - and I was last there in 2019 before the Pandemic hit. I was also there in 2016 and 2017 as well (2017 - right when all this Brexit shit was hitting the fan and the MAGA-type Brits voted to leave. The EXACT same kind of idiots that voted for Trump)

Consent would be the best case scenario. Hopefully we could come to some kind of agreement with Denmark and/or Greenland. Trump could also utilize economic pressure to force Denmark to relinquish control of Greenland. Again, not something that is great, but also not something that I think is going to have long-term impacts around the world.

I honestly have no idea what you are referring to in regards to the women comment.
You don't get it do you? The EU, NATO (yes, that includes Denmark), Canada and the UK are all on board with protecting the sovereign rights of all of these entities on which Trump and Putin have designs: Ukraine, Canada and Greenland. That alliance will simply not allow Trump to do what he wants in terms of Canada and Greenland. You do realize Macron and France just parked a Nuclear Submarine off the Halifax coast don't you? You do realize Canada just severed ALL ties with the U.S. and now they're spending millions on shoring up defense of their Arctic properties - which will soon be THE TOP, MAJOR trade route - and they've got Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland on board with them in so doing. That also entails protecting Greenland from the Russians and Trump.

Ain't nobody in this hemisphere going to allow Trump to do SQUAT in Greenland, quite literally. They didn't even allow JD the time of day to squat and take a dump there, except on a US military base.
