Exactly. They've lost the national popular vote in 7 of the last 8 presidential elections and they're about to lose it again, but you will never, ever convince Trumpers that they somehow still aren't a large majority of the American people. As I've said before, they're not the Silent Majority but just a loud and obnoxious minority. And a lot of that misguided belief comes from the fact that most Trumpers live in rural areas and suburbs that are still overwhelmingly white, conservative Christian, and Republican, and so they just assume that everyone (except for a few weirdos in college towns and minorities and white liberals in some big cities) are just like they are. It's where the whole "Real American" idea comes from.
Yep. And many of those state legislatures and congressional delegations are only heavily Republican because they're so heavily gerrymandered. Take away the gerrymandering and a good chunk of that red would disappear in the next election. But good luck convincing them of that - most of them honestly believe that they're winning all those seats because that's what a majority of voters in their state want.I remember in 2016, right-wingers were trying to make hay out of the “fact” that you could go from coast-to-coast traversing only red counties.
On ZZL, going back to before the split, poasters such as ItsBoTime loved to cite the percentage of state legislatures, governor’s mansions, Congressional delegations, and Senate seats controlled by Republicans as a sign of the GOP’s popularity - not people represented, the land mass represented.
My oldest had seen a political map online a couple days ago and asked me why there was so much red compared to blue. She immediately understood my explanation that it was due to population density so I'm happy to report that my child who just turned 13 a couple weeks ago is more informed on this issue than the majority of Republicans.Exactly.
They look at an “election map” of the U.S. and see that huge swath of red and think to themselves: “See? Look at all that red! We HAVE to be the majority! The majority of the U.S. is red/Republican… that map doesn’t lie!”
But what they fail to understand is that, comparatively, hardly anybody actually LIVES within that huge swath of territory. They just don’t get it. It’s just land, not people. There is indeed a good reason why it’s called “fly over country”.
Even worse, North Carolina has 10.8 million residents; combined, those 5 states have 5.38 million residents. The states of South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming are connected and total 477,000 square miles. They have exactly one more EV than North Carolina which covers an area of less than 60,000 square miles.
And they each get two senators, so that’s six electoral votes right there! The states of South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming are connected and total 477,000 square miles. They have exactly one more EV than North Carolina which covers an area of less than 60,000 square miles.
I explained the electoral college math today to my 10 and 8 year old daughters. My 8 year old said bluntly, “that’s dumb.”My oldest had seen a political map online a couple days ago and asked me why there was so much red compared to blue. She immediately understood my explanation that it was due to population density so I'm happy to report that my child who just turned 13 a couple weeks ago is more informed on this issue than the majority of Republicans.
Intelligent kid. She will go far in life.My oldest had seen a political map online a couple days ago and asked me why there was so much red compared to blue.
