Seems more than a little to lavish praise to me, but I am always suspicious of lavish praise in political campaigns (or in life generally, really).

I did think she seemed more relaxed and more willing to move beyond her talking points, which is a good thing.

I tend to assume that her zag to the left in 2019 is not as representative of her views as her zig back to the middle in 2024 since the latter seems generally more consistent with her pre-2019 career, but her promises in the 2019 continue to dog her now and (if she wins) will probably result in a good bit of political flak no matter which way she leans in governing.

My question would be, why are they mutually exclusive? Can't you hold them accountable for their environmental footprint while lauding them for a job well done? We do want these companies to be environmentally responsible. Don't we?

Well it was really targeted to an important group that feels ignored.

Fox will be airing Bret Baire's interview with Kamala in a couple of hours. He has been inundated with MAGA emails and texts warning him not to go easy on her. He has responded to MAGA nation by assuring them he will be tough on her.

It will be interesting to see if he capitulates and joins the Jesse Watters/Frau Ingraham, Sean Hannity team

Anecdotal story incoming.

Small town in the Piedmont/foothills of NC in a very red county. Family member goes to the democrat HQ in town, picks up a couple Stein/Harris signs.

Lady inside says she is very optimistic about NCs chances. Says people have been coming in to get signs/materials consistently, and an older 85 year old gentleman came in and got one of every sign they had, said he's a Republican, but is voting for Harris and Dems because he'd be damned if anyone is telling his granddaughter what she can or can't do.

Thought that was cool.

Yeah, I listened to it this morning and she really did well. She's gonna win this thing.

1. Fair about not making cartoon characters out of an entire group of people. It is, of course, difficult to talk about politics without using generalities, and then the generalities can raise these sorts of issues.

2. Yes, Trump makes the MAGAs feel special. This "real American" BS started with Palin and the Tea Party, but Trump rode that wave. I would put this in the category of stupid. A con man always makes the victims feel special. Then he cons them. I would put empty promises into this category as well.

3. The communities where Trump does well aren't necessarily the communities that "aren't doing well." Trump's support is predicted first and foremost by browning. Communities that are becoming less white, are pro-Trump. I suppose hating the same thing could be conceptualized as caring about them, but it's a stretch. I mean, did the US care about the Soviet Union or vice versa during WWII?

4. At the end of the day, the primary disagreement between us is the extent to which MAGAs realize Trump doesn't care about them. Maybe they don't. I'm not going to insist on this point because I really don't know. But there has to be a reason why they talk about him being sent by God.

5. My focus in these discussions is trying to explain the whole "Trump was sent by God" thing, the "Jesus is watching over Trump," etc. Trump isn't the first one to appoint justices or promise security at the border, etc. They didn't say Bush was sent by God. They didn't say Reagan was sent by God. Only Trump. And they know he's a very bad person, which is why they say things like, "sometimes God works through imperfect men" or "God's plans are incomprehensible to us." They wouldn't have to resort to such self-humiliating bullshit if they didn't know something is wrong there.

6. There is also the personality piece to the puzzle. The people who like Trump are people with authoritarian personalities. People with the Dark Triad of traits are especially Trumpers. That's sort of orthogonal to the discussion here, but anyway. . .
1972 - Jesse Helms v. Nick Galifinakis, US Senate

“Vote Jesse! He’s one of us.”

“Real American” BS started long before Sarah Palin.

In 1950, in the US Senate race between Frank Porter Graham and bigoted segregationist Willis Smith, Jesse Helms and Tom Ellis (a critical part of Jesse’s political organization, The Congressional Club) produced and spread a photo of Mrs. Graham dancing with a black man.

Dr. Graham finished first in the 1950 Democratic Senate primary; but, he didn’t win a majority - leaving open the possibility of a run-off election.

Willis Smith was going to concede and not run in a run-off. Helms, Ellis, and other right-wingers got wind of this and rallied bigots to Willis Smith’s front lawn. Smith agreed to run.

He defeated Dr. Graham.

Mammala is fired up and in control

Whoa. Not a common occurrence to hear an American pol use that tone towards a political opponent, much less a Dem. Biden has a few times, but typically in standalone speeches. I respect that Harris isn’t going to let Baier sane wash ttump’s violent fascist plans - because folks, ttump, theil, miller, Vance, and the heritages have violent, violent plans.
