We had an insane amount of injuries Fedora's last 2 years here - I heard some of that was we didn't have a practice field so Kenan was torn up from overuse

I'm not a Fedora hater, I think he was a good choice to lead the program that unfortunately didn't work out in the long term. This is constantly ignored by Fedora haters. Not only did we make the ACC Championship game, we were competitive despite very biased officiating (in my view). While Fedora may not have been loved by high school coaches, I think that was overblown and Mack was recruiting big time from states not named North Carolina. I also think NC HS coaches would have come around as not everyone player can go to NCSucks and these HS coaches would need to show they could place players at NC's flagship university.
We were never competitive (and rarely present) in an ACC title game since then.
And unfortunately, the powers that be have decided to go with the retirement tour multiple times since thenI'm not a Fedora hater, I think he was a good choice to lead the program that unfortunately didn't work out in the long term.
The problem Fedora had by the time he was let go was that the bloom was off the rose and recruiting had bottomed out with it. He had shown that defense was not a priority under his leadership and therefore we were not getting any great or better defensive recruits. And with a thoroughly mediocre defense, at best, offensive recruiting and production had to be elite just to create a decent or better overall team...which Fedora was no longer doing.
I liked Fedora and hated to see it end the way it did. He got us as close as any coach since 1980 to an ACC championship (including Mack 1.0) and unfortunately came up just short when he had the opportunity. But I also didn't see much realistic reasons for optimism under Fedora and so he had to go.
The interesting thing is I think that Mack 2.0 would have worked reasonably well had he stepped down voluntarily after year 3 or year 4. He would have rebuilt the roster through recruiting and rebuilt a good amount of goodwill throughout the state and the fan base. And unfortunately, the powers that be have decided to go with the retirement tour multiple times since then
For sure, It would have been best case scenario. Orange Bowl year 2, but disappointing year 3. But then he hung on for 2 more years and all of that good went out with him.

That’s what was so frustrating to me about Mack 2.0. When you’re that age as a coach you really can’t afford a huge backslide on the field 3 years into your tenure like he had in 2021. Recruits were probably already getting told by other coaches that Mack was going to be gone imminently anyway even when he seemed to actually be making incremental progress in the field in 2019 and 2020, so as soon as he slipped up that season the recruiting momentum also started to rapidly drop off.The interesting thing is I think that Mack 2.0 would have worked reasonably well had he stepped down voluntarily after year 3 or year 4. it’s not a unique hill, Fedora just didn’t have an FBS QB and a huge amount of injuries but outside of DEF depth the team wasn’t bad (and should have been better than 7-6 the first year)That’s what was so frustrating to me about Mack 2.0. If he had just recognized the situation after the ridiculous loss to State to finish that season, he would have still left the program in really good shape for the next coach. Instead he stayed on way too long, won nothing of significance, and tanked recruiting in the process to the point that the roster was in worse shape than when he took over. (I will die on that hill—Fedora’s record his last 2 seasons was obviously much worse than Mack’s, but the team still had talent going into 2019).
Good grief. Ugh.![]()
Sources: North Carolina, Belichick ban Pats staff
North Carolina and first-year head coach Bill Belichick have banned the New England Patriots' staff from accessing the Tar Heels' program, sources told ESPN.www.espn.com
Hmmmm. NFL’s 33rd team not playing nice with others…
Wonder if there’s an exception for Drake Maye!Good grief. Ugh.
Fedora did get us to the ACC title game and we gave Clemson all they could handle. But there was also a clear downward trajectory in his last couple of years that couldn't be ignored, and his defenses were often historically-bad awful, even in his best years here.Fedora was accomplished
What struck me was he "lost it" the last year or two Remember at the preseason presser when he ragged on about Brain injuries-insinuating they were not a big deal
That was odd I guess by then he saw the writing on the wall and was pissed??
Come on CF it’s Thursday, I think BB has been shit on enough this week. At this point we just have to hope for the damn best.Looking more and more like hiring Belichick was a mistake. Yeah, it got a lot of attention, but doesn't look like it's going to make much difference in the product. It's been a circus more than anything. He's old and not going to be there long in the first place. His record without Brady and other star players sucks. He has a 24 year old girlfriend who talks to him on the sideline during the game. He has 6 Suoer Bowl rings but couldn't get another NFL job. I don't think he is taking it that seriously. He's already rich, has a 24 year old girlfriend, and got 10 million more from UNC.
The shittings on will continue until morale improves.Come on CF it’s Thursday, I think BB has been shit on enough this week. At this point we just have to hope for the damn best.
The only words they changed were “Gulf of Mexico” to “off the Louisiana coast.”Likely eliminated DEI BS from grant. I’m glad the grant money came through.
