“… Holt said they are creating lists of missions to prioritize for air assets when available.
“The National Guard is committed all over Western North Carolina,” Holt said.

“They are focusing right now on pulling people out of places that are still in flood waters. We do have missions, and we are working to get communications to people in isolated areas.” …”

Lineman crews (and equipment) will move into FL, GA, SC, NC, and TN from other states (let’s hope for no more substantial storms this hurricane season).

The Northeast states and Midwest states will likely reduce/halt most maintenance and new construction work and send available linemen (and equipment) to the impacted states.

The linemen love this work - according to a cousin who works for Duke Energy (formerly FP&L) in the Tampa area, he gets ridiculous overtime for this type of work……..including time sleeping (IIRC) while in another state doing emergency work.
Its a crazy good deal. Some of those guys are making over 300k. I'm glad they are getting it.

I would have loved to get paid for all the time I spent away from home when companies casually decided to put me on the road for 3 or 4 days a week for weeks at a time.

See, I have watched a lot of found footage movies because I am that kind of nerd, but this is the moment in the film where I would be like why the hell are you still filming instead of taking cover????

Aaaaaah. Glad they are ok. 😱

Many linemen (power company and telecom) have good unions. Those that don’t (see my cousin in Florida), their emergency situation overtime is protected by the linemen in union states.

I definitely support their OT pay.

The National Guard was working today to deliver supplies and water to communities that are difficult to reach by conventional trucks due to road conditions. I saw reports of air drops of supplies by helicopter in Banner Elk and NG vehicles reaching Spruce Pine.

Got an aunt, uncle, and cousins who live outside of Forest City/Ellenboro whom nobody has heard from since Thursday. Definitely an uneasy feeling, but my family is assuming the best right now and hopeful that they are just completely without power and cell service.
I was scrolling thru twitter and read about Saluda folks making it to spindale for gas and groceries (and service)... And lake lure folks making it to Forest City for the same... But being better relatively to Saluda/lake lure might still be rough.

What good is FEMA doing here?

Not a rhetorical or argumentative question-- they may be doing a lot behind the scenes.

I personally haven't seen or heard of any visible FEMA presence in WNC.
All of the search and rescue task forces from across the country that are in the mountains right now are being deployed and paid for by FEMA. The Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) and swift water groups belong to local municipalities across the country but are FEMA assets in situations like these. FEMA deploys these task forces and reimburses the municipalities that send the personnel and equipment.

This was the list of FEMA and state USAR assets deployed as of two days ago. The list continues to grow each day. For example USAR task forces from Los Angeles, Orange County (CA) and San Diego left within the last 48 hours to begin the long drive to North Carolina. Several members of the San Diego FD USAR team were critically injured in a crash in Birmingham during their travels here.

And, in less important news, the Great Spectrum Internet Outage of 2024 has been solved, although that doesn't mean that every Spectrum customer has service again.

I'm so excited and relieved for those of you with families and friends in the most affected areas who are getting good news.

I realize this isn't the point of the video, but the mudslide picking that rusty old piece of farm equipment and hurling it forward was very creepy.

Yeah. An extremely minor gripe in the greater scheme of things was local radio and internet being of commission, and not knowing who won the VB until 12 hours after the fact. But now that I know, I'm even less happy

Duke Energy sent power restoration timeline texts to the various counties tonight which I consider ambitious and/or hopeful. In my county and neighborhood, i was thinking 1-2 weeks, and they're now talking 5 days. Similar optimistic timelines for WNC relatives in different counties.
My mom’s power is back near Lenoir. Taking her home tomorrow to get her sorted out.
