PS - should we just rename/rebrand this as the ongoing Helene thread and start a new, separate weather thread of other weather updates?
I would say yes. We're going to be talking about Helene and the cleanup and rebuilding for a long time, unfortunately. Probably best to have a separate weather thread for other weather events.

No.

It’s the weather thread.

Let it ride as the weather and Helene thread…..it’s September 29th; the US will have another major storm this Fall and responding to it will impact the Helene response.

I've read today it is estimated there are about a thousand people still missing and unaccounted for in NC and TN. I'm sure many of those people will be heard from, but no doubt the death toll in the NC mountains is going to go considerably higher, maybe even into the hundreds.

What good is FEMA doing here?

Not a rhetorical or argumentative question-- they may be doing a lot behind the scenes.

I personally haven't seen or heard of any visible FEMA presence in WNC.
It's my understanding that FEMA is providing assistance with search and rescue, assessing and developing plans to repair infrastructure (water systems, roads, hospitals, etc), providing water and fuel, and communications support. Providing additional resources to state and local efforts. Logistics. Coordination.

Not far away on Highway 70, hundreds of people lined up outside the Pisgah Brewing Company with jugs and bottles in hand, waiting for water that has been so hard to find. Nearby, someone discovered that an 18-wheeler wrecked during the storm was full of bottled water, and dozens of people came to grab cases and hand out cases to others, until police officers arrived and shouted for them to leave.

“You are stealing!” one shouted as the crowd dispersed.

Confused Wait What GIF

Yeah, I’m sorry, but in these circumstances, a wrecked tractor trailer full of bottled water is fair game.
