Hurricane Helene: Rumor Response
Thanks for posting this. I've been trying to play defense on FB with all the "FEMA is broke as a result of paying for illegals..." Posted this Newsweek article a few times, but of course, no one really cares.

Coworker also works for FEMA and was deployed...here's what she just reported:

'I’m currently working in Buncombe County (above article) serving in the Asheville and Swannanoa areas. Just picture the news, and multiply it by 10 (in the areas the news can’t physically get to). It’s true devastation and they will be searching for bodies for awhile. Unfortunately the water rescues turned into mud rescues, that are now mud recoveries, being searched out by human remains (HR) K-9s. Some cars and houses are partially, if not completely under mud and will have to be excavated prior to searching. It’s truly devastating."

Did you tell her to stop confiscating supplies from random good Samaritans who are trying to help?

Power and water just got back on at the house of Mapp, kids are negotiating shower schedules. I may never go back to cold beer again. Warm coors banquet has been my rock and redeemer the previous 6 days.

Now it's my turn to cough up some donation $ and supplies, grab a chainsaw, and get to work.
🎉

“… Other resources, like the nurses on horseback, have "been great" at getting medical supplies to those areas.
"Yesterday and (Thursday), they've pushed through some of those places that we were not even capable of doing welfare checks for a while," Pukansky said.
Now that access has been made, WCES is working to make sure that those people can be supported.

Pukansky said WCES and all the fire departments keep hearing "heartwarming" stories of people helping and taking care of one another.

"People are taking care of each other. People are looking out for their neighbors. Continue to do that," Pukansky said. "If you can get somewhere, ask somebody else near you what they need you to grab while you're there. Just see what you can do to help somebody else." …”

Talked to a friend that lived in the Garren Creek Community out from Fairview. She and her husband are heading back there tomorrow with supplies for the folks that haven't made it out. She found out that two more of her neighbors had been swept away and died.

Her mom has a house in Old Fort that was hit by a large tree. She evacuated to Statesville but has already met with an insurance adjuster and been given money to rebuild. She's going to do that but does not want to ever live there again.

Found out that a UNCA student was swept away while waiting on a boat rescue when the structure she was in collapsed. This was in Swannanoa.

I’m glad your mom’s ok.

The other stories are terrible. And I’m afraid there are likely so many more terrible stories to come.

Just got power back, around 7pm this evening.
Went out around 6am last Friday. 7.5 days.
I’ve gotten used to cold showers. They’re a relief when the house gets too hot and muggy.
Now it feels cold in the house, since the AC has been on a couple of hours.
Mom is missing in Arden. No word from her since Sunday afternoon.
She was alive and well then. I’m thinking her phone isn’t charged and she still is without power. 88 years old but still spry.
I called the 211 number, they’re issuing a welfare check and should get word to me in 72 hours.

Really hope your mom is ok.
