Midsommar is great. I don’t think I can ever bring myself to watch Hereditary because my son has a severe tree nut allergy and I know a nut allergy plays a big part in Hereditary. If yuns want a good and fun film for Halloween, watch Crimson Peak. Currently "free" on Prime. It's not particularly scary. Not gory. It's really more a Gothic tale than Horror. And it pokes fun at Gothic tropes, which makes it more interesting. Set designs and shots are incredibly beautiful!
Now, if you want brutal and horrific (but not stupid gory nonsense), go with Midsommar or Hereditary. By Aster. Very clever films. Will make you feel devoid of hope. And that's the point.
Someone mentioned The Lighthouse, by Eggers. Incredible film. I wouldn't say it's "horror." More psychological thriller. But very good.
Eggers and Aster have been in a dual the past decade. I'm looking forward to Eggers' Nosferatu around Christmas. Should be good!
Agree, really enjoyed it. Again, despite not being a horror guy at all.Midsommar is great.
To me, Hereditary is well made and deeply disturbing, but not really frightening. Not really “horror” in the Halloween jump scare/entertainment sense, but horrifying in a depiction of the way family abuse and trauma impacts and infects multiple generations. And the nut allergy is one of the least upsetting things in the movie.Midsommar is great. Well put! It also does a great job of lifting the veil, so to speak. Nothing around us is ever as it seems. In the vein of Rosemary's Baby.To me, Hereditary is well made and deeply disturbing, but not really frightening. Speaking of A Quiet Place, I just recently watched the latest installment of that film series (the prequel). It was fine— pretty much what I expected— but one of the things that really bothered me was that one of the main characters was wearing a tie that he kept on during his entire time in the movie. Dude, the city has become an apocalyptic hellscape taken over by man-eating aliens that you’re trying to get away from. It’s okay to take off your tie now. I don’t even think he loosened it.Saw The Silence last night. I liked that it was similar to A Quiet Place but with more backstory. I didnt like they showed the monsters (at least so much).
LMAO right?? Things like that drive me crazy.Speaking of A Quiet Place, I just recently watched the latest installment of that film series (the prequel). The Vast of Night deserves a second mention. An excellent, low budget, horror-adjacent movie.I don’t see nearly as many as I used to because my husband has become very sensitive to violence, so I have to be selective/watch alone.
X is my favorite fairly recent horror flick.i really want to see Late Night with the Devil, but haven’t found the opportunity yet …
Oh yeah, I really liked No One Will Save You. That’s one I got my husband to watch due to sci fi angle and we both liked it. It would make a great double-feature with Vast of Night.
Yep — there is one scene that amounts to a ghost story around a campfire (if the campfire was a remote radio call-in show) that is a particular creepy pleasure, but for a small budget flick The Vast of Night has so much extra going for it (directorial style, snappy dialog, well rendered historical setting) in addition to the core story. Many cuts above most indie sci-fi and horror. The Vast of Night deserves a second mention. An excellent, low budget, horror-adjacent movie.
Not a horror movie and boring as hell.Yep — there is one scene that amounts to a ghost story around a campfire (if the campfire was a remote radio call-in show) that is a particular creepy pleasure, but for a small budget flick The Vast of Night has so much extra going for it (directorial style, snappy dialog, well rendered historical setting) in addition to the core story. That’s too bad. I thought X was a blast and also really liked House of the Devil, the Innkeeper and The Sacrament.Thumbs down to MaXXXine. It's like two different average horror movies were hacked together into one confusing, crappy horror movie.
