Hot Stove: UNC Basketball

there are good portal players available all over the place - mid majors and high majors. @superrific malik brown from syracuse to dook and pedulla from VT to ole miss are just a couple recent ones we've faced off the top of my head.

according to IC, we're on mckneely from UVa. i like that. kid defends, competes, decent athleticism, shoots the hell out of the ball. he would make a fine 2 for us next season.
I like McKneely, too, but I hope it is not another Dawson Garcia-type who lights it up in the Dean Dome for a visiting team but can't hit the broadside of a barn once he transfers to us.

heard that.

i think mckneely is a much neater/cleaner fit at the 2 for us than garcia was somewhere in the post / on the wing. i also think that garcia could've been a much better player for us if he had accepted a role that was a bit lesser and different than what he thought he was getting originally.

Not set for life. Not remotely. Maybe if you're 50. At age 22, $5M after taxes is a nice pot of fallback money. It might sustain you if you're willing to live a $100K-per-year lifestyle. That's not what these guys are looking for.
While that isn't what they are looking for, it's still above the average family income in the US and a damn good starting place.

Had i been fortunate enough to have $5M after taxes at age 22, it would have changed my life.

$5M after taxes is $125k over 40 years, more than most people make. Plus one could work a job they live on top of that and invest. A good money manager and that is enough for life.

From my perspective this board is in a bubble in that probably 95% make we'll above the mean, just as NBA players do, do the perspective of living in $125k a year doesn't seem as good as it actually is.

I believe Dawson was an outliers in that he had more going on outside of school. He did better at Minnesota.

The question is whether they were set for life. I do not think what you've described is set for life. For one thing, inflation. Second thing, they have to not lose the money in the market.

Of course it's life changing money but it's just not quite the same as being set for life.

True, there are probably many individual versions of set for life.

Right, you'd have to make ~$250K a year pretax to make $5M over 40 years, which is much more than most people ever make. Plus they're spending a lot of that money just to live, even at that yearly income level a person would be doing pretty well to have $5M in savings and investments after 40 years. Having that pot of money at age 22 is completely different. I would assume that at the very least a college player making that kind of NIL money would be able to play overseas and not have to touch his college earnings for 10-12 years and in fact make enough to add to it. By that time he's probably looking at $10M minimum in the bank by his early 30's. That may not be what these guys are looking for but I'm talking about reality, not hoop dreams. And if they do turn out to be a starter level NBA player, they've still got 10-15 years to make hundreds of millions in the league..

My prediction - and I hate to say it - is that next season will be worse than this past one.
Unless nobody that matters leaves early for the pros or transfers. Then we could be pretty good depending upon the portal.

I would be highly surprised if that came to pass.

It is hard to predict until portal season closes, but I'd expect a Sweet 16 quality roster at minimum.

I'd be as well but since there's no player actually guaranteed to be on the team next year, I'm going to wait just a little longer before taking a wildass guess.

American Studies Major - academics was a reason given for choosing UVA. All Academic and Honor Roll student.

Cadeau, Van Lubin and Caleb Wilson make a pretty solid core. If you could bring in 5 portal studs around those guys, you would have a solid 8 man rotation that could compete for a championship.
Pretty sure if any team brings in "5 portal studs" they will be in contention.

He's is more natural on the wing, handling the ball, or backing players down, than he is catching, post-move, on the block. That is the position/style he'll play in the league, if he makes it. So, I doubt he's going to be looking to come in anywhere and play on the block.

Nobody thinks HD or any coach is targeting ND to put him primarily on the block

If VAL is on the floor, he should not be playing the 4, at all.

And nobody thinks VAL should be playing the 4. Idk why you keep repeating this

Like I said, if you are brining Davidson in, he's going to be expecting to play the 4. Which is why I said that I don't know if HD can sell him on backing up Caleb. (Unless HD doesn't think Caleb will/would start. If so, that's a lot to be paying a backup.)

Right, most of his mins would come at the 4. He also makes a good small ball 5 when paired with non shooters (Wilson)

I can almost promise that Hubert and staff aren't out there pitching backup roles to the top players in the portal

If Wilson wants a starting spot he will earn it. If he's better than ND at any point next season that is promising for Hubert

Just a general thought from how I recruit players in offseason. I tell them it boils down to a triangle of trade=offs:
money, playing time and winning. Most players can have two of the three and will have to decide from one of three bundle situations
1) money + playing time (but not winning) : you will get pretty of minutes/ shots and paid well, but the team may suck (usually because they spent their few resources on a few guys)
2) money + winning: you will be in a winning situation and get paid well, but you may not get the minutes/touches you'd like
3) winning + playing time: you will be on a winning team and be a contributor, but I can't pay you as much as you'd make somewhere else. This is usually a great approach for guys that have been productive on losing teams and want to taste some winning. They are willing to give up bucks for winning.

Only the top guys can get all 3 on their own terms. And yes, there are other elements that come into play (chemistry with coach and teammates, distance from home, team style, etc), but it usually boils down to those 3 factors.
