That Montross kid turned out pretty good. We can agree on that. It’s kind of comforting that our recollections aren’t really any better than our current evaluations.
Nor are we in any more agreement about the past than we are the present.
Salvadori was also close to being Reggie Miller or Chuck Nevitt skinny. He was a project; good hands, good athleticism, THIN.I was there at the time. Expectations were 0 for Salvadori coming in. He was seen as a Bill Guthridge development project, redshirting his freshman year. IIRC he had an asthma condition that really affected his conditioning (same for Brian Reese). He really stepped up the Cliff took off.
Warren Martin was one of my favorite players back in the 80s. State and dook fans used to yell "Watch Warren Walk!" at him, but he showed steady improvement and ended up as a good, solid player off the bench. I always thought he was a great example of the ability of Coach Smith and his staff to develop a player during his time at UNC.Some of our unheraldeds…who did well, all things considered…
Serge Zwikker
The Wolfs
Kevin Salvadori
Ed Stahl
Warren Martin
Lee Dedmon
Tremendous player, for sure. How I fucking hope he overachieves as much in his coaching career as he did as a player.I can think of one. Shooting guard, played in the NBA for a while, went into coaching.
Pretty sure JPep was highly heralded in bb, not nearly as much in fb of course. My One of two favorite athletes at UNC.Peppers - don’t know.
I remember him having this monster dunk off a rebound one game. Dunked all over the opposing player. Can't recall what team it was but I can still see the dunk in my mind.I was there at the time. He did for most of the season, but Coach Smith changed things up before the ACC tourney.Dean started and played Salvadori over Rasheed Wallace IIRC
Dean had a very successful system/process for integrating freshmen. Certain things had to happen before he would give them that starting spot. He kind of knew what he was doing. He did for most of the season, but Coach Smith changed things up before the ACC tourney.
Reese started over Stack all year (though Stack had a sloppy handle his first year).
I’m trying to remember the freshmen who played under Dean who started the first game of the season. I 100% know Jordan, Kenny Smith, and Antawn Jamison did. I also know that Rick Fox and Pete Chilcutt (redshirt freshman) started their first games because J.R. Reid and Steve Bucknall were suspended for that game, but they were generally not starters for the rest of the season.Dean had a very successful system/process for integrating freshmen. Georgetown was the 7th game of that season. And Lynch didn’t start in that game (the game’s available on YouTube). James Madison in the Maui Invitational was the first, and Lynch didn’t start in that game either. As impressive as he was as a freshman, he started in only 5 games all season during his freshman year. The starting lineup for most of the season was Rice, Fox, Madden, Chilcutt, and Scott Williams. Lynch only started in games that one of the starters missed due to injury.Definitely George Lynch. I remember it was against Georgetown and all were amazing how ready he was to play a a true freshman playing in his first college game.
I have a vague memory (I was young) that there was a game I think Lynch’s freshman year, maybe Missouri? Lynch dove after a loose ball in a scrum and somehow the opposing player wound up with his nose somewhere under his eye, completely broken.Georgetown was the 7th game of that season. Walter Davis didn’t start the first game of his FR season.I’m trying to remember the freshmen who played under Dean who started the first game of the season. Others who may have started the first games as freshman are Walter Davis, Phil Ford, Mike O’Koren, James Worthy, and Sam Perkins, but I’m not sure about any of those. Ademola Okulaja may have started his first game as well.
I know Reid didn’t start his first game. Curtis Hunter initially started and then Reid took his spot.Walter Davis didn’t start the first game of his FR season.
Phil Ford was the 1st FR to start the 1st game and be the starter going forward. For that he earned a newspaper headline of “This Ford’s an Edsel.”
I think O’Koren started his 1st game and continued to do so; but, I’m not certain.
Worthy didn’t start his 1st game as a FR. He was “just emerging” as the highly anticipated player he’d been when he shattered his ankle against Maryland.
Sam Perkins didn’t start early as a FR; Pete Budko would jump center and play the first few minutes and then Perkins would enter. Before the season was halfway done, Perkins became the starter at center.
Did Brad Daugherty start as a FR? In his 1st game? For the year, he was 5th on the team in minutes played. The back-up bigs were Warren Martin, John Brownlee, and Timo. What that ‘82-‘83 team really lacked was depth at PF.
Did J.R. Reid start the 1st game as a FR? He started 31 of 36 games.
Found a YouTube video of Daugherty’s first ever game (vs. St. John’s). He did not start.Walter Davis didn’t start the first game of his FR season.
