There are some good ones still out there, and there's some buzz about the kid from Princeton. Plus, Tanner has good European and international connections, so there could easily be solid names there.

IMO if we get Drake and/or Ian back, we don't need a rock star at PG. Just someone solid, who can hit the 3 at a reasonable rate, solid at PnR, and plays good defense. I think so much depends on the two freshman wings and what they decide. It would be challenging to replace one of them, and darn near impossible to replace both.
I wonder how hard they tried to keep Cadeau. Because it would be a huge mistake if they were fine with letting him go without already having a better player to take his place.

I'm sure it was all on a scale, they probably had a list of pros and cons of keeping him vs. letting him go, and he probably had a list of pros and cons of going vs. staying. I'd guess our staff would have been fine with keeping him on certain conditions, and those conditions were unacceptable to him.

Would it be a mistake to modify their conditions based on their relative confidence in a commitment from a future portal PG? Who knows.

yeah, i am more and more bewildered by that situation/decision as each day goes by without us securing ANY lead guard, let alone one on cadeau's level or better.

like, wtf.

a lot of players are off the board already and the portal closes in 2 weeks on tuesday...

time and options are dwindling.
2 weeks is the deadline to enter. Once a player is in, they can pick a new school until classes start.

Of course, the better players get picked off pretty quickly after they enter, but we don't have to have the roster completely wrapped up in 2 weeks.

(And grad transfers and international players don't have to follow that timeline at all.)

Wasn't this supposed to be the point of having a GM - so that we wouldn't have to worry so much about this?
Tanner has been on the job for 6 weeks now. I'm sure he's doing work, but hiring a GM a month before the portal opened was never going to be a cure-all.

thanks dude.

edited my post to reflect the situation a bit better.

FWIW, sometimes it's better to cut bait with a talented player if he is causing problems for the team, even if he's the best player. NBA teams do it commonly. They tell disgruntled players to just stay at home.

If EC was part of the reason why the team's chemistry seemed off (and I have no idea if it was; just inferring that it might be from his parting comments), then losing him can be addition by subtraction even if the replacement is not better in a strictly basketball sense.

The problem is that we apparently have these issues with players over and over again…seemingly every time the team doesn’t play well.

Dawson Garcia was a problem for the team. Caleb Love was a problem for the team. Now Elliot Cadeau is the problem.

When this happens over and over again, it’s not really the players.

This is scary

In the first two cases, the addition by their subtraction supports that view.

I wouldn't put EC or CL anywhere near the DG level.

Hubert hasn't earned the credibility to get buy in from players the way Roy or Dean had. Whoever replaces Hubert is also going to have players transfer out of the program with whispers of good riddance. It is part of the game these days.

Those players went on to be great contributors for other teams, so these subtractions are band-aid solutions that attempt to mask the real issue with our program. And we're treating student-athletes shabbily in the process.
