Apparently the current UNC roster cost 11.3 million (in UNC dollars).

Probably depends a lot on whether that number includes dollars earmarked for Powell/VAL. I'm thinking it must, since they seemed to have enough money to give AS an offer he considered.

In any event, it seems we have 2-4 million at least that we have available to spend on somebody.

Please link to the dollar figure? A reputable link.
Nobody reputable has the exact dollar amount that each school has spent on their rosters. There’s just no good way to get that info. The closest thing we have is this report from Matt Norlander that gave a ballpark budget of the top spenders this off-season. For what it’s worth, he is as credible as it gets when it comes to CBB reporters.

That would put UNC in the top 10 in money for basketball. But it seems like they only got one real impact player in the portal in Veesaar. Maybe they didn't want to spend the money that Stojakovic was asking for. If that is the case then I wonder why if they don't have someone better they can get for the same money. Or maybe they didn't have the amount left that he was asking for. It just feels like besides Veesarr and Wilson, everyone else is a role player or a bench player. That doesn't mean the team can't be good, but just looking at the stats and the guys they did get, next season doesn't appear to be looking any better than the previous one. Maybe Caleb Wilson is enough to make them better.

There is still a lot of time left in the process. The real unknown is regarding whether or not players will be granted a fifth year of eligibility. That could be a real game changer for a number of teams, particularly UNC.

But who knows how accurate these numbers actually are? How are they coming up with those numbers?

The scuttlebutt is that we bid against ourselves for Evans to ensure we got him, but other than that I'd guess we're at market value for a lot of our guys.

We had to replace a lot of guys this off-season, which means we are having to stretch those dollars. So while we're likely top 10 in spending, we also had a lot to spend on.

Like I said, I don’t think anyone knows the exact numbers.

Norlander is as reputable and plugged in as it gets when it comes to CBB coverage. You can chalk up the article as pure conjecture or whatever if you want, but he’s not really the type to push clickbait junk and I don’t think he would publish it if he didn’t feel confident in the info.

How would that help UNC? I thought the NCAA has granted a temporary waiver for athletes who previously competed at a non-NCAA institution (like junior college or NAIA). And it only applies to those who would have otherwise exhausted their eligibility after the 2024/2025 year. Do we have anyone who fits that criteria? Is there someone out there in the portal like that who would be a fit for Carolina? There may be a few football players like that, but not on our basketball team. Not that I’m aware of anyway.

If UNC has money to spend on those players, then they will likely be able to get a couple of solid, experienced players without having to break the bank, because there won't still be a lot of top programs with money to spend.

Lubin, too, but I still don't really understand his justification for it, as he has a year of eligibility left.

Oh. OK. But are there any like that out there who aren’t already known quantities? Isn't the temp waiver already in place? I thought It’s been a done deal since Dec. 2024 as I understand it. I mean there’s no “real unknown regarding wether or not players will be granted a fifth year of eligibility.”
The players who fit that criteria should already know, and have known since 12/23/24.

I’m thinking the only unknowns left are the ones who are testing the NBA draft waters - who may decide to come back, Drake for example. After that, there is only the VAL unknown… will he return from the portal like Seth did last year?

Don’t get me wrong, if there is a former Juco or NAIA stud out there who gets a 5th year waiver then Sign him up!

I would imagine any possible transfers won't happen until after the NBA draft deadline passes. Meaning we will have to wait and see who stays in the draft and who drops out and is willing to come back to college basketball.

He wanted more money than what UNC wanted to pay him. Generally, teams pay incoming transfers more than existing players. It was a gamble for Lubin that may or may not pay off.

AS? According to Ben's sources, UNC made him the highest offer, between Stanford and Illinois. He didn't choose based on money.

Edit: Sorry, I clearly read "Lubin," not sure why I associated your post with AS.

Maybe I misunderstood. I thought that a number of players who had exhausted their 4 year eligibility were hoping to be granted a fifth year (Withers being one such case).
