I pray they don't repeal Obamacare, that is our main insurance along with Medicaid for my kids. Really worried about vaccine mandates with RFKjr and health related things that will come up, and worried about defunding the Dept of Education.
obamacare isn't going anywhere. He has no plan and I don't think it is near the top of his agenda. I do think he will defund the dept of education but that will likely be a blow to those who aren't active participants in their kid's education. He is driven by his ego. He wants easy wins. healthcare is a massive undertaking. he will focus on illegal immigrants with criminal records and securing the border first.

lol spending on education, healthcare and infrastructure means they’re emasculated?
no dude. you are making that connection; not my intention. You know I work in transportation planning? Mostly around Safestreets. I wish we did that kind of spending. What I am saying is that by and large, the Germans, Dutch, French, Italians I worked with did not want to fight anywhere, including Europe.

Agreed. He will go after Education and Interior first for easy wins, the focus his toxicity on Agriculture and Labor. He want's no part of healthcare.

Ok, good to know. Not wanting to go to war is different than being emasculated imo.

So is all my pub friends thinking the dems are gonna take their guns and allow men to use women bathrooms. Take a step back and chill. You have been conditioned by your party to believe the worst.
so you really believe both sides are the same? When have the dems ever elected a president that has been divorced 2 times and bragged on live radio how he would like to have his own daughter?

My guess is that St. Donald of Mar-a-Lago, il Duce, will push to make Social Security payments not subject to federal taxation while simultaneously slashing those payments so that people like me wind up with less than we had before so as to accelerate the spending of retirement funds invested in the stock market. This "Big Sell-off/Spend-down" will, in-turn, allow his billionaire supporters to further tighten their grips on corporate America by snapping up stocks sold by cash-squeezed retirees at fire sale prices.

I think the point is that rather than investing in their own defense they get to mooch off the US and employ their financial resources elsewhere. That is also trump's point. trump is just more crass in expressing his point. I share his point and hope every US citizen would agree that Europe baring more of their defense expenses is a good thing for the US.

I'm fairly close to retirement - late 50s - and I'm definitely worried about what will happen if the Stock Market tanks and takes most of my retirement portfolio with it, and he cuts Social Security and Medicare. I'm beginning to wonder if I'll be able to retire when I had planned. At least our house is paid for so we won't end up on the street I guess.
You may want to move some - if not all - of your retirement portfolio to safer ground for the interim. Let's say you have $100 in an IRA or 401k. That could drop to $50 (or less) over night with the crash that is going to happen (and mind you, that crash is going happen sooner than later even if Harris had won). Maybe safe-guard what you have for the next year or 3 and see how things shake out. As far as SS and medicare - I think you're ok and will be alright at your age. However, if Trumpf/Musk fuck with it enough, it could effect those in their early 50's on downward. It's good you have the house paid for. That's huge!

76 and similar but have 2 sons and 4 grandkids that will probably suffer greatly. not a newbie just mainly read and comment sparsely
Yes, I do feel sorry for anyone with grandkids... they may suffer most all of their lives. You and I? We're on the downhill slide. Our race is run for the most part. We get to sit back and say "get off my lawn" and "I didn't vote for the guy!" "I got mine... now you try and get yours!"

Hasn't that considerably increased in the last few years? Last I checked, most of Europe were on schedule with an increase in funding where much of it had to be hard spending for equipment and the like and not just training and salaries.

Increased, yes. Not every country in compliance. This is an easy win for trump so he gets to look tough. He may try to get the agreed upon % increased but again, I don't look at that as a bad thing.

45. No wife. No kids. Pretty steady job where the corporate office appreciates me, but the home office doesn't--the joy of being the only white collar guy in a blue collar place.

Not gonna lie. I don't have a crap ton of money, but I'm considering call it all a wrap, selling everything off that I own, travel the world for a while and let my destiny fall where it falls. I really don't want part of any of this. And it's either plan for the civil war, or get out. And I'd like to see the world before the nukes start dropping. I'm too rational and care too much, and I'm sick of feeling like this.

Have been giving this a good deal of thought today. For me, as a foreigner living in CR the impact is most likely marginal (though there is an increased propability of a global trade war). The CAFTA nations have a trade deficit of $8 Billion with the US which in Trump world means he’s winning. It would be incredibly stupid to slap tariffs on us…as long as that happens our economies should be okay. I have a nice portfolio (I expect a correction coming in 2025 but that was coming with either candidate).

My big concern are my kids and their immediate job prospects. Both are studying in the US at great schools and are hoping to work there after they get their degrees; international students currently can work up to 3 years if they are STEM degrees…after that you need a H1 visa. Last time around Trump severely curtailed H1 visas (thanks Stephen Miller). I’m very nervous what happens this time around with the increased nativist rhetoric. Think it will boil down to who exerts influence in the Trump white House (the real MAGAS or the tech bros). So yeah, I’m concerned about my kids immediate future. One is a senior who graduates in June…additional stress for his job search. Dean's list, double STEM major…kid has worked his as off…expanded his search todsy to the UK, Canada or maybe getting a PhD.

Wait……if CAFTA nations have a trade surplus with the USA, wouldn’t Trump find that BAD and that the USA is losing?

Y’all are thinking Trump will be running this.

In 2016-17, “conservatives” and Republicans thought Trump was a competent businessman who would help reset and restructure government. They soon realized how ignorant and incompetent he is.

That’s part of the reason behind Project 2025. Right-wing Republicans are not letting this opportunity evaporate. They’ve mapped out the transition and they’ll run it……whether Trump is on board (he will be) or not.

Best case scenario- I'll be wealthier, a lot more cynical and enjoying retirement

Worst case scenario- he does have the nuclear codes.

Likely somewhere between those two

It's difficult to say overall how a Trump presidency could impact me but I think it's pretty likely to damage my career substantially. I'm finding it impossible to be jovial and entertaining today with classes.
