How will the trolls be handled?

Well, I think we now have a strong case to find out how trolls will be handled.

Any dissenting opinions should be viewed as disinformation and the purveyors of the disinformation should be labeled as idiot, mouth breathing trolls.

We must keep this site pure for the sake of the party.
How pathetic does it feel to hide your tag?

As someone who managed to never get banned, have a meaningful number of post removed from the old board (2-3 maybe) or constantly reminded to stay on subject, it's pretty easy to spot who the trouble makers are. Those posters usually push things to an extreme point over and over and that causes people to react in a negative way and then said posters cry foul because they don't like the pushback or the moderation. I think reading a whole lot more than posting probably allows for a broader perspective on how things evolve on threads. That way you're not as invested is the back and forth bickering but you see how it got to that point.

Anyway, I'm not really that good of a boy as I've reacted negatively to plenty of post the same way myself. And I hate to even put this out there, but the one person I would trust to judge a poster's character/intentions, would be NYCFAN. She stays above the fray and who I would trust to make the tough calls.

You can proceed to request my banning NYCFAN for even dragging your name into this conversation and I couldn't quibble. lol

We must protect this site comrade. Only information approved by the party should be shared.

My first ignore

This is definitely trolling. Posting exact same nonsense on 2 separate threads.

While I hardly ever used it on the old board, I’ve found my first test case for the “Ignore” feature on this one. Thanks for making it so easy, person who knows who they are!

If more people used it, there would be so many less problems on message boards. In the past I have asked for a forced ignore feature for hopeless cases where two posters ruin every thread they post on. You see that a lot on the basketball board with certain posters.

Nonsense…. This is exactly what we have been striving for!!

One Party, One rule. Dissenting opinions should be met with ridicule and the offending party should be ostracized.

There is no place here for anyone that speaks against The Party and the ultimate end goal.
Trolling is an artform and you have no artistic ability. Kind of embarrassing watching you regurgitate the same line repeatedly.

Honestly expected better, but casting aspirations for something useful from MAGA is always ill-advised.

Yep time to test out the ignore feature

@Rock this is probably the line where you have a poster not with just different views but clearly here to be a prick

I'm generally a person that hasn't used the ignore function on IC very often because I like to mix it up. But, in trying to turn over a new leaf on this board and be more about debate than confrontation, I'm going to use the ignore hammer when I feel like the person is an obvious troll.

Callatoroy? Never liked him on IC. Don't agree with him on anything. But he's been relatively decent since coming over to this board, so I can do the same for him.

KarlMarxism? Already on ignore. I know a troll when I see one. This guy isn't a Sarcastro clone or anything benevolent and clever like that. He's from IC, and he obviously has felt wronged by the liberals over there. He's here to stir the pot.

My guess? OCS. I recommend we all test out this ignore function on him and see how good it works.

Just disappointed in the low effort. First pass attempt and it failed spectacularly.

Come on, man. "KarlMarxism"? That's their idea of a good jab here?

I have a pretty good built-in ignore function (though it failed me every now and then), so I never tried out the available ignore function over at IC.

I would urge everyone to consider trying the following — the first time you feel compelled to respond to what you perceive as a troll pushing your buttons, don’t do it. Even if you erase or delete the rash response, let it go once. Maybe an ill-phrased post or you misunderstood or the poster or you is having a bad day. Whatever.

The second time you have that reaction to the same poster, try the ignore button as your response.

We know we’ll have legit trolls try a new alter-ego if the first one gets ignored and doesn’t get the desired disruption. At that point, let a moderator know so that can be pursued.

Now, if someone comes on here openly spewing hatred and vile insults, that should be dealt with via ban.

But rather than engage that poster, just report that poster — it is amazing how much more effectively we can work together to maintain an open space for sometimes contentious disagreements if we first don’t engage the haters. They aren’t here to be convinced or to even change anyone’s mind, they are here to disrupt and destroy.

Our Sarcastro-wannabe faux Marxist bot right now has made it clear s/he is not posting in good faith. Use the ignore function if your brain don’t have effective troll-resistant crumple zones.

DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS.
DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS.
DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS.

This place has had a great launch and honeymoon to start. Let’s all nurture that while we figure out how to get moderation established.

What’s a “forced ignore feature?”

Basically a moderator setting which prevents poster A and poster B from seeing each other's posts. There have been years long fights between posters on premium, which despite many moderation interventions, mediations and even temp bannings, just do not go away. Forced ignore would be a step between these and permanently banning two paying customers who were both equally guilty.

That is an intriguing option — I had proposed a “Take it Outside” thread to send these types to hash it out, but that obviously could spiral. This makes more sense.

If only it existed on the 247 software. The 247 techs showed no interest in wanting to program it, thought it would be fairly easy - the tech already exists for the ignore function, it is just giving moderators the power to set the flag on the account. On the original ezboard software that IC used about 20 years ago, i was able to do this when I could put custom javascript into the header and footer of a page. I could do all sorts of things, like make a person's text appear pink for them only. I of course didn't do that but...

It might exist here on this superior software.

Do you want this to become a vibrant and interesting site, reminiscent of the old zzl? Or do you want it to morph into a protected domain of a handful of like-minded poasters, similar to the last few years of the zzlp? Honest questions.

I prefer the former. Less moderation fosters a greater expression of ideas and, to me, a much more enjoyable and entertaining site experience. I recognize the need for some level of moderation (no porn, no death threats, no illegal activity) but censoring others’ political viewpoints or ideas will eventually and inevitably lead to the latter option above. Plus, for those that don’t really “LOVE LOVE LOVE” to hear opposing viewpoints (looking at you CLT), the ignore button should be a sufficient defense against reading someone else’s hurtful ideas:)

Honest to God, it’s hard for me to understand these calls and absolute longing for more moderation by some folks. Very hard to understand.
It’s the lies, racism, homophobic, and misogynistic stuff that needs to be weeded out.

Opposing views are great those things are not.

God, that would be awesome. That way the troll keeps posting shit and nobody ever replies because no one sees it. That's better than an actual ban.

The devils is in the details, though. The obvious stuff (slurs etc.) is obvious.

But let’s take calling Kamala Harris “low IQ” as an example. My immediate response is that is a racist stereotype, TBH, BUT I have called Lt. Gov Robinson, for instance, a moron many times. Was I being racist?

I would like to try to have discussions first along the lines of “I hope you didn’t mean it this way, when you call Harris a “low IQ black woman” the reference to her race and gender as part of the insult seems to intentionally conflate your opinion (warranted or not) of her intelligence with her race and gender as support. I hope you can see how insulting that is to women and black people and harkens back to egregious stereotypes.”

I’m not naive enough to think that would be all that successful with some posters, but could change the tone with good faith posters.

🤷‍♀️
