Well we already knew that if we kept HD we were unlikely to get the better results, and the "upholding the legacy" part did not seem to be helping us get better results. So even understanding that it is a very real possibility that, as you say, what comes next will be even worse, I really just don't think that continuing on the path we were on was a reasonable option. By all accounts , if we had kept Hubert, we were looking at another offseason of massive player turnover except without many of the donor NIL resources that brought us players like Wilson and Veesaar the previous offseason.

Bottom line is that there is no real way to "uphold the legacy" without winning and we looked unlikely to do that moving forward. So change was necessary, even understanding that change brings the very real possibility of failing with the next coach, too.

what all does the bolded entail to you? aside from the simple facts that HD was coached by DES and worked under Roy, how was he doing those things?

it just feels really arrogant to me to claim that no one else could possibly come in and respect and honor the program's legacy and tradition and instill the same sorts of values that dean and roy did.

"Because I said so" and being all bitter for some questions(I think they threw him softballs) it's just not the way you want a leader to approach things public... but his first press conference was weak too.

People talk like the head coaching job is only X's and O's, they are running a program and in this case a top American brand.

Unless he's gonna be absolutely crushing it he's gotta do better

Given that Hubert had spent years in the media, one of the most disappointing parts of his tenure was that he was not better at the press part of the job, from start to finish. He was just never really comfortable in that setting.

He thought that he could offer staff changes to save his job. That is why there was an organized pressure campaign on the AD from old donors and coaches/players on behalf of Hubert - just like with the new stadium plans. The problem was that Bubba was not clear enough with him during their initial conversation and Hubert naively thought there was a chance to save his job.

Some coaches are notoriously petty and I think that a lot of coaches saw HD, like Roy before him, as someone who was given a spot rather than earning it by working his way up the ladder. And for the pettier ones, they're willing to say things like that.

I probably wouldn't say that anywhere near the record if I were a coach, but some will.

Which is really strange considering he worked as a talking head on ESPN all those years. You'd think he would be a media pro.

Since we need to know things in terms of possessions and possessions is not an official NCAA statistic, it must be estimated. The formula I am using is:

Possessions = FGA-OR+TO+.475*FTA

This is a pretty standard computation that accounts for when possession is lost by a team. The only bit of uncertainty is the free throw portion, because we don’t always know how a team got to the line. If they are shooting two, then the two FTA’s account for one possession. But if they go to the line for one after making a shot, then the one FTA has no possession attached to it, because the previous FGA accounts for it.

The .475 multiplier estimates how many FTA’s represent one possession. This figure has been derived using play-by-play data.

I do a tempo calculation based on each team’s statistics in a game, average those two numbers and apply it to both teams for the game, since each team’s total possessions should be nearly equal. The pace for each game is shown on each team’s schedule (either actual pace, or for future games, predicted tempo).

Honestly I don’t have a problem with coaches being dicks like this (personally find it entertaining) as long as they put their name on the quote. It’s so cowardly to trash someone anonymously when you know the quote is going to make it out to the public, especially when said coach is almost certainly less accomplished than Hubert.
 
This has probably already been discussed at length, but I'm too lazy to go back through 210 pages. When was the last time that UNC selected a men's basketball coach from "outside" the family? Frank McGuire in 1952 from St. John's? 74 years"

Yeah, I looked it up at KemPom and Iowa State ranks sixth among the Sweet16 participants. Their AdjT ranking is higher than dook, Houston, Illinois, Mich St, etc.

They are efficient. But the 31st in scoring was boosted by them really laying the lumber to some low-major schools in non-conference play. TJO's style of aggressive defense (one of the reasons I would love to have him) can lead to some lopsided blowouts. They put 132 (!!) on Alcorn State.

I went back and read that AMA posts on the topic and I'm willing to say that I misread a bit of the nuance the first time through.

It certainly looks like Bubba didn't handle the initial conversations with HD as well as he should have.

How would Ben know what was said in those discussions?

Is he talking to Hubert, Bubba, or Newmark? Who else would know first hand what was said? Hubert's agent?

I give everyone somewhat of a pass on Evans as he was no one's first, second, or third choice for our PG.

He was a "it's 2am and the bar is closing" choice and HD/Tanner did what they had to do to go home with someone.

Yeah, Evans didn't work out and even did worse than I think was reasonably projected, but I think you can have a few beers and squint and see why they chose him at that point. And then they overpaid to make sure they got him as opposed to no one.
