"Davis did not ride the team bus back to North Carolina after Thursday's loss, per a source, though that is hardly an anomaly when a team travels locally and it was already the plan going into the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. When the team arrived back on campus Friday afternoon, Davis' car had already left the parking lot and he did not communicate with his staff for nearly 24 hours. Players were left to wait and speculate."

It said that it's not unusual in the circumstance where the team has bused in from such a short distance.

But not speaking with your coaches for nearly 24 hours (and, potentially, the players for longer than that) when there are rumors swirling about your job is pretty atypical.
I honestly don't know what is typical of a coach who is about to fired. Also we don't know what he knew at that time. He was clearly devastated by the loss. This story feels like a little piling on. I wonder who the unnamed source is.

I suspect he knew that his time as UNC head coach was finished after that game, first for losing the game, and second because he suspected he was going to be fired. Pretty good reason to be extremely upset.
I find it a little disappointing that he supposedly went dark for a day on the team once they got back to Chapel Hill, but yeah I get that emotions were running high. Don’t want to nit pick about it and I’ll wait until the dust settles for a few days/we have a clearer picture of how it played out.

Man I made dinner thinking nothing was going to happen tonight and now have to catch up on an hour’s worth of reactions to this.

Anyone post Hubert’s statement in here yet? Definitely doesn’t sound like an amicable split. Unfortunate but totally understandable from his perspective. He specifically mentioned wanting to coach again soon. Guessing maybe an NBA assistant gig might be more his speed.
My takeaway from that statement is that Hubert truly was at least partly oblivious to the criticisms people had of him. I don’t blame him at all for believing in himself and his ability to do the job but the issues seemed obvious to pretty much everyone except him.

lol, I've never known it as anything other than UNC-Pembroke. You old, Don!
A good friend graduated from Chapel Hill High in 1978. He’d been admitted to Dartmouth and was headed there.

He’d finished 10th in the 1977 National High School XC Championships. He’d also run a <4:10 mile.

Pembroke State had an excellent distance running program. They tried to recruit him.

He had no idea Pembroke State existed or where it was.

I’m old enough to remember it as Pembroke State.

Several on this board, not me, remember UNC-G as Women’s College.

Disappointing to read this.

Plus, we don't know that it actually happened that way.

And if it did, it's fairly insignificant in the scheme of things. He has relationships with everyone involved. If it took him a little longer to be ready to face them I'd bet they were okay with it.

What is the point of continuing to hide behind Dean to refuse to acknowledge the simple fact that Hubert wasn’t good enough for one of the top jobs in college bball?

It’s over. Time to look towards the next coach and hope they can do what Hubert couldn’t.
Whether he was good enough is debatable. And that alone might mean he wasn’t up to the bar. But it’s irrespective of the point at hand.

What is not debatable is that he deserves the utmost respect, and a level of humility and grace among Carolina fans of any stripe, whether he stayed or now that he’s leaving.

That is not hiding behind Dean. It is *standing* behind Dean. If you can’t understand that, then you and your metrics and your thorough search have lost the forest for the trees.

Lol like clockwork. His bizarre press conference and ghosting the team and coaches certainly indicates he knew his time was over. Stress makes people do crazy things but this is not a great look at all.

The post you were responding to did not say anything disrespectful about Hubert. It simply said he did not perform up to the standards of the UNC program. Expressing that sentiment does not Somehow put someone at odds with Dean.

The guy won two of the biggest games in UNC basketball history, and for that alone he deserves some respect. He ruined K's last home game and ended his career in the Final Four, which several sports analysts at the time said was the ultimate "own" in the UNC-dook rivalry. The guy was also a great player for Dean Smith and bleeds Carolina blue. Whether or not you believe that he should be fired he should at least receive the gratitude of all UNC fans for those two historic wins alone. And that's especially true since his critics have gotten their wish and he is gone - no need to pile on now.

He doesn’t have to step down to get what he’s contractually owed.
That comment was in response to one wondering if the AD was trying not to pay HD everything he was owed.

If you resign, you typically are owed nothing. CF's post was meaning that UNC should allow HD to resign and get the full amount owed to him.
