“Hubert, we’ve decided to make a coaching change. We can either pay you part of your buyout in exchange for letting you resign and putting on a good front publicly, or we can just straight up fire you and pay your full buyout, but we won’t attempt to make the announcement sound like a mutual decision to help you save face. Those are the two options”.

100% speculation on my part, but I could see it playing out like that. Personally I wish they would just pay him the full buyout and do him a solid by framing it as a mutual parting of ways. I guess we’ll see though. I’m not getting bent out of shape about it until we get an official update and more
details come to light.
the problem with the thought process behind this hypothetical play is that a resignation rather than a firing is preferable for both sides.

even though i think HD needs to go, UNC doesn't come out looking rosy in the scenario where they fire a beloved alum.

the goal here should be amicable divorce. pay the fucking buyout and act you have some class.

Doesn’t his buyout drop from $5 million to $3.75 million on April 1? Maybe they are trying to get him to take the lower amount now versus wait until April 1 when they can fire him and contractually pay that amount (but would be stuck in neutral with any hiring search for that extra week)?

This rumor mill speculating nation wide about what is going on with CHD is due to the mishandling by our athletic administration post season.

I have no trust that if CHD is kicked to the curb that the next hire made by our powers that be will be anymore successful in their first 5 seasons and likely less successful .

Maybe they ain't got the cash after Belichick and his minions sucked up all the money? So maybe they passed the hat and still came up short, because the donors want to know who they will be getting?

Could be and if I were HD I’d tell them to kick rocks.

The PTB letting a group of supporters delay the inveitable is ridiculous. Those individuals are delusional to want to keep HD.

no one is buying a Hubert Davis resignation. He obviously wants to continue coaching
doesn't matter who buys it, its just the right way to proceed in a situation like this.

reminds me a bit of arsene wenger and arsenal in 2018. wenger ended up resigning and arsenal paid his 15 million pound buyout.

arsenal didn't sack a legend and wenger didn't suffer a firing and everyone maintained their dignity.

unfortunately, the people running UNC right now don't give a shit about honor or dignity.

TJ Otzelberger has been head coach at Iowa State for five years. They won 2 games total the year before he became head coach. In his five years they have been to the NCAA tournament each year with progressively 11-6-2-3-2 seeds in the tourney. They have lost once (2023) in the first round. I heard Bobby Lutz on Charlotte sportstalk radio today say Iowa State has $8.5 million in NIL funds for their men's basketball program to recruit players to Ames, IA.

yeah, the notion that we can't do better than we have the last 5 years is batshit insane.

@heelinhell your loyalty to HD is admirable but you've got to look at the situation a bit more dispassionately.

8 seed
missed tournament
1 seed
11 seed
6 seed

is a really, really poor 5 year stretch for this program.

I don't trust the decision makers to do this the right way (just look at what happened with Belichick) but it was clear that HD wasn't the guy to save the program. Even understanding that the downside risk is very real, I think we just have to make a change, whether we trust the people making the decision or not. Once you know the coach you have isn't the guy, you have no choice but to move on.

"What must be done eventually, should be done immediately."

Maybe I'm looking at this with Carolina blue tinted lenses but I can't imagine that this coaching search results in us hiring someone "lower" down the list than, say, a TJ Otzelberger- which would be an absolutely spectacular hire. This isn't Carolina football where we apparently feel that we can only hire Conference USA coaches or has-been geriatrics who are out of work and unhirable by anyone but us. I don't think that we'll land Brad Stevens, Todd Golden, Dan Hurley, or Nate Oats, for a variety of reasons, but there's no way that a guy like TJO wouldn't walk to Chapel Hill from Ames, IA for this job. And he'd be a phenomenal hire, IMO- but in the unlikely event he isn't, we'll at least have tried something radically different than the same old same old that UNC has done for 7 decades.

It’s perfectly understandable to not have any trust in our PTB, but I’ll bet dollars to donuts the next hire will be an improvement if we truly open up a national coaching search.

If that is true Roberts sucks
Of course we all knew that anyway

I have Otzelberger ahead of Oats on my list, personally.

I am probably a little more cautious than you. I wouldn't be shocked if we ended up with someone like Mark Byington or Fred Hoiberg, who I have in the third tier or so behind the "Probably won't happen, but gotta call them" guys and the "actual priority targets" guys. There are plenty of reasons that guys like Lloyd, Golden, May, and even Otzelberger/Oats might not want to come to UNC. They're generally in good situations where they're very popular with their current fanbases; some of them are already winning at the highest level; some of them are at SEC/B10 schools that probably have more resources than UNC. It's not an easy thing to make a coach who is successful and happy give that up for a new challenge.

Great points. Admittedly I'd be a little underwhelmed by Byington or Hoiberg but would be totally open to either of them.

They are my 2nd and 3rd choice after Otzelberger. I don't see Stevens, May and Lloyd leaving their current positions, and I don't want Golden.

You just make the termination effective April 1. That doesn’t stop you from interviewing or selecting the new head coach.
