I think we could be fine. Mingo, his brother and Adams I think are contributors. Stevenson should be back and while yes, our guard play has been spotty, we should keep a couple of Dixon, Luka, Denis, Evans. High has even shown some upside. We will need a big..I'm not convinced vesvaar is gone. If he slips to round 2 might be better off in chapel hill than G league and making more. But we can buy a big.

Absent some portal miracles we're going to suck next year. I have no idea why our fanbase repeatedly wants to carry water for Hubert's mediocrity. He's not a good coach, he wont' be a good coach next year or the year after. "Could be fine" isn't our standard, this is not Carolina basketball.

I feel like Davis was tracking towards having a good enough year to keep his job prior to the injuries and it seems unfair to pull the plug after he loses the top two players on the team at the thinnest positions. That said, next year's roster is looking pretty rough and maybe he can salvage it through the portal, but I have to admit I don't think it looks very good right now.
As long as they have the $ UNC can reload in the portal year after year.

Mingo, Adams, Dixon Luka, Denis, Evans and High doesn't sound anywhere close to a decent roster to me. Maybe if we can convince HV to return that can provide someone with plus ability to build around. If he doesn't come back it's a massive number of holes to fill and even if he does I think we need at least a couple of high level adds. As Bigs stated, with money comes opportunity, so maybe we can plug all the holes through the portal, but that's a plethora of holes. Maybe that's just the way of the world now, but it's tough to feel good about it.

Had a damned sight less to build with last year and before HV and CW both got hurt were on the verge of breaking into the top ten. And ,yes, it's tough to feel good about it

We'd need a Cormac/Harrison type portal grab to be competitive and this staff has managed to do that one time. Every other year we've had big gaps we've hit less than needed to be successful.

On top of that, if we do get the guys they will not be well coached. Hubert's ceiling is 8 losses with a team that was really well constructed and had veteran talent at every position. We won't have that next year, it's gonna be a bad one.

I tell you what. I hope Hubert Davis is the coach at North Carolina for years and years to come because it will mean that he is winning and has our program where it rightfully belongs among the college basketball elites. But whatever time he has left here at UNC, and I have no idea how much or how little it is, I hope that his time at UNC does not conclude before he has the opportunity to play NC State again with a fully healthy roster, and can kick the ever loving fuck out of that piece of shit coach they have, preferably in Raleigh in front of all of those vile cretins that comprise the NC State student section who were chanting “Fuck You Hubert.” My blood was absolutely boiling. I had no earthly idea that my hatred for NC State could increase, but after Tuesday night, it has found a whole different stratosphere.

The players have to be available also.

Having multiple, we'll funded, schools going after 3-5 to players at each pairing is a challenge. While we did well at center this year, PG doesn't look nearly as successful.

I believe relying on the portal every year is going to keep producing these unbalanced teams.

Yeah, but it can keep the team competitive in the meantime. It's very difficult to build continuity now. The best players go pro the role player transfer out.

We have a number of ancillary players likely to be back next year. Recall that this year , Trimble was the only player on the team that had played in a Duke -UNC game. It's possible we might have that sort of rebuild again but not likely. We should be able to pay more attention to fewer holes to fill.

Some people think just making the tournament is a good season with Hubert because he's a nice guy and is part of the family. There's been one great run at the end of the season and one other good season overall that ended in a Sweet 16 loss to a lower seed. This looked like it had the chance to end up as a good season overall before Caleb and Henri got hurt. But the problem is it's been very inconsistent under Hubert, and most of the seasons have been mediocre to bad with his as the coach. I know, "things are different now," but I don't want Carolina basketball to be "fine" and settle for mediocrity just because "things are different now."

Issue is, how can any team NOT rely on the portal to a large extent?

Top HS talent wants to go 1 and done.

Mid level HS talent (like nickel, jalen washington) probably isn't going to win many games for at least first 2 years, and if those kids don't play, they transfer.

I just don't see any way to not need significant talent infusion from the portal every year, and agree that makes it more likely to have continued roster construction issues

I hope so.

Hubert has three seasons to win a national championship and keep our streak of consecutive decades in tact.

I also think people shouldn't just assume this season was going to finish "great" but simply got derailed because of the injuries. The metrics and on court performances indicated it wasn't. If we played really well down the stretch we likely would have finished a 5 seed, with a generational talent on the team. This was going to be a 9-10 loss team with a healthy roster. Love Hubert, love what he gave to the University, love how he's represented the University...but he's not the guy. Sooner we move on from him the better.

I agree, I'm just hoping that it's a few players to fill spots and not a complete rebuild every year.

I'm still puzzled with Cadeau, I think this is a better team of he had stayed.

Yeah, they were losing the Miami game before the injuries, too.
