Maybe someone has asked this question already but at $14 million, how come it ISN'T top-25 talent, even without Caleb?

Edit: I admit I came up with $14 million completely from a possibly faulty memory, so I apologize for my ignorance in advance if I have over- or under-stated this.

Luka is good. What a ridiculous statement. He is averaging almost 10 points a game at Division 1 UNC!!!

He just needs more consistency. You need role players to win such as Stevenson and Powell. Luka has to be a starter and they need to get him more shots to get on track and in rhythm. We have to get a third scorer.

If Veesar, Trimble and Luka can increase scoring and Dixon can start making consistently good decisions, and if the team rallies for CW and plays better defense they can make the tournament and win that first game. After that, CW MAY be able to come back and who knows what damage can be done.

Remember that no one expected the Joe Forte led 2000 UNC team to make the final four and they did.

BYU has 3 players who have scored 30+ this season. Easily more talented
Arkansas has one of the top back courts in the country and a front court rotation of 3 6'10 seniors. Easily more talented

SJU has good athletes and mostly seniors. Good defensive unit with just enough shooting. More talented
Kentucky is all over the place but is deep in the front court. Oweh/Aberdeen are serviceable. More talented

Iowa is mostly Stirtz who happens to be very good. Won't say more talented. Borderline top 25
St. Louis is deep and balanced. They are playing a bit beyond their talent perhaps. Borderline top 25

Indiana, Nova, Auburn, TAMU aren't top 25 imo. And not watching the MWC so no comment on Utah St and state sucks

Thanks for the detailed breakdown. I still think you're underselling the talent on this team.

Luka is averaging 8 ppg on 39% shooting in ACC play while being a minus defender. That isn't good

Agreed he has to be a starter and increase production greatly with Caleb out. I'm just skeptical he will

Caleb is a big chunk of that 14 million. What do other teams rosters look like without their highest paid/best player?

If so, our roster would still be more without him than Duke paid for their roster (according to Greg, via Nakos).
 
Didn't we land Caleb fairly late? That would suggest that we might have submitted a higher bid. If AJ got 6, maybe Caleb asked for 4.5.

We got him in early February, which is reasonably late, but not so late as to be at a huge premium. I'd think 4.5 would be near the very upper range of what we paid, but it is at least theoretically possible.

If I remember some of the things Boozer said about Duke after leaving corrective, I suspect that there are thins more tangible than love involved. To quote, "What's love got to do with it".
 
Whatever, Luka is averaging almost 10 points a game against division 1 opponents. His defense could improve but so can the entire team's defense. I am not wowed by the collective defensive effort of our guards. If we are going to win going forward the points have to come from somewhere.

If HD were strategic about this, he would really practice mixing in a 2-3 zone concept to protect Veesar.
