IC going to On3

i'll maintain my 247 premium sponsorship for as long as this billing cycle runs, which will be until december. my initial impressions are that by and large, the new Rivals-imported staff know significantly more ball (basketball and football) than the IC people outside of Jason*. they seem to be not as tied into the programs and i suspect they won't have the same level of access to recruits because Don is one of the hardest workers on the HS recruiting beat in the country, but they also seem less likely to uncritically parrot coachspeak and write with a real understanding of what's happening on the field/court.

* Jason definitely knows what he's talking about but has a near-crippling inability to admit when he's missed on an evaluation (which happens to everybody), most evidently in the case of Max Johnson. plus he's taken to boosting some of his worst political takes onto his sports Twitter account.

Who are you referencing by Rivals-imported staff? Tar Heel Illustrated was basically just Andrew Jones and Jacob Turner. They have now added John Henson, too. The rest are just 247 national guys.

huh, it appears you're right. i didn't look into any of the names i was reading, but i was mainly referring to Bryant Baucom and Isaac Trotter's contributions I read the other day.

fwiw, the guy who fired Colbert will be in charge of several aspects at the new company, including CBS Sports, which owns 247. We'll see what happens next.

In his new role as Chair of TV Media, Cheeks will oversee Paramount’s broadcast and cable television businesses, including the CBS Network, CBS News & Stations, CBS Sports, and CBS Studios — as well as BET Studios, Nickelodeon TV Studios, See It Now Studios, and Paramount Media Networks, home to MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, and BET.

Cheer for the name on the front not the one on the back.
Sure, and I do... but in the past we have also connected to the person wearing the jersey. I'm not a "shut up and dribble" kind of fan. The players wearing the jersey are what pulled us in in the 2/3 of the year when there are no games going on. If I'm only cheering for the jersey, then I can just show up as a fan in November and stop paying attention in April. But historically with the players being a part of the team for 2 to 4 years mostly, we could cheer for what was on both sides of the jersey. Now it's harder to care about what's on the back.

While that is true for UNC football and basketball this year (well, technically we only have 70% new in football), that is atypical. In a normal year, you should expect less than 50% changeover -- with maybe 2-3 new starters in basketball and maybe 8-12 new starters in football.

I guess we could ask our resident Duke board members what it is like to follow basketball with 5 new starters every year, as they have been doing largely that for over a decade now.
I don't think we know what the new normal is. Maybe it's going to be 70%+, maybe it's going to be less than 50%. I don't know... I just know what we saw this year, and the HUGE increase in transfer portal usage across the board. Maybe it will be used less when it's no longer the new shiny toy... but right now usage seems to be growing every year.

So, if you see a poster named "Phat_Cheeks" on the game threads, just a heads-up

@altmin I know your guys hands might be tied but the ads are causing problems left and right.
The ads are a feature, not a bug, as they want people shelling out the $30 a year to get rid of the ads.

It's certainly a stupid idea when you're trying to attract customers, but it seems pretty obvious that's what's being done.

Oh yeah, I get it. Part of the problem is that the ads are breaking the forum. If they didn’t do that, it’d be a start. But, Shannon Terry is really hamstringing IC by trying to extract every penny out of customers that he can.

From a message board standpoint, I'm not sure what changed or when it changed, but somewhere along the way it became way less a bunch of Carolina fans analyzing recruiting and X's and O's and discussing games, and way more straight up pissing matches between "sunshine pumpers" (such a cringe moniker) and the "bitter bunch" on every single thread topic. The game threads especially became so off-putting.
This is where I am. I'm currently subscribed both places with my 247 sub scheduled to run out at the end of September. That will give me roughly a month of in-season chatter with game threads. I'm going wherever is less toxic, which frankly feels like it might be On3. There's already a thread in 247 seemingly taking shots at the staff of IC. I've only been around for seven or eight years, so I feel like there are backstories that I don't know, so maybe that's it.

I am curious about the writing styles of both staffs. While I like the IC folks, I agree that they sometimes just don't speak plainly about certain topics. I'll compare that to 247 when we get in season.

I actually am having trouble getting to IC now. First couple days it was easy. Now I Google therivals site and it is a few clicks way
Screw it. Yes I have subscribed

I've been around for 20+ years and folks are throwing shade that I wouldn't have guessed.

It looks to me like there are a healthy number of folks who have been on IC who've had their hands slapped over the years and never gotten over it. And now that they have an opportunity, they're getting their shots in. (If being an IC mod taught me anything, it's that there are a lot more folks out there than I would have thought who get personally offended at being told "no", who will get really indignant about it, and will apparently carry a grudge afterward.)

I have seen basically no ads with Chrome and AdBlock. I'm sure others have not had it so good. The only ad I see is at the bottom on the app. And if I use Safari on my phone, I don't even see that.
