This was a remarkable 161 page opinion. It does not read like any judicial opinion I've ever read. It is almost like a personal letter to Trump and his supporters.

In any event, here was just one of the paragraphs:

Small wonder then that our bastions of independent unbiased free speech –- those entities we once thought unassailable –- have proven all too often to have only Quaker guns.52 Behold President Trump’s successes in limiting free speech -– law firms cower,53 institutional leaders in higher education meekly appease the President,54 media outlets from huge conglomerates to small niche magazines mind the bottom line rather than the ethics of journalism.55

Reagan appointee. I'm guessing near retirement (probably already has senior status). All out of fucks to give.

One thing about MAGA, there’s no chance of them reading a 161 page judicial opinion.

“… It is unclear if Iran would get anything in return for accepting the deportees. Alex Vatanka, an analyst at the Middle East Institute, said a deportation flight would allow both the Trump administration and Tehran to declare victory, despite tense relations.

President Donald Trump could claim a win for his mass deportation campaign, and Iranian officials can claim to be protecting their citizens, Vatanka said.

“The Islamic republic, despite the horrendous things it does to its own people, likes to go out and say, ‘We protect Iranians anywhere in the world,’” he said.

… Foreign affairs analysts and human rights advocates expressed concern that those on board could face persecution. Earlier this year, some Iranians deported by the Trump administration to alternate countries had converted to Christianity, an act Iranian law says is punishable by death….”

Interesting. One of the tenets of this jurisprudence (a stupid tenet) is that a person who suffers an injury has no standing to pursue injunctive relief, because it is highly unlikely that the person will again be subject to the illegal behavior and is thus situated no differently than the general public.

But this guy was detained twice. Sort of makes the improbability argument look stupid. I wonder how this will affect the court's -- oh, it's Alabama. Never mind.

“… Lewandowski: There is nowhere that you can provide safe haven to people who are in this country illegally, not the Super Bowl and nowhere else. We will find you, we will apprehend you. We will put you in a detention facility and we will deport you.

The NFL has been so woke for so many years, they finally decided to make a comeback. But it’s so shameful that they’ve decided to pick somebody who just seems to hate America so much to represent them at the halftime game.

Benny Johnson: Corey is saying that there's going to be ICE enforcement at the Bad Bunny concert at the Super Bowl.”

——
Bad Bunny is an American, right?

He's Puerto Rican, so yes he's legally an American, but to MAGA I'm sure he's not - he's just another useless, dangerous immigrant from Latin America somewhere. Maybe Lewandowski will be so busy with his main squeeze Kristi Noem in a hotel room somewhere that he won't have time to bother with the Super Bowl. I'm sure that there are plenty of other MAGA minions who would take their place, though.

Wait, "Xochitl" is her nickname? Isn't it supposed to go the other way? The nickname softening a foreign given name because natives can't pronounce it?

I mean, obviously she can do what she wants and has her own reasons. It's just not the usual order of things.

Not necessarily. My dad is half Puerto Rican and half Caucasian. His legal first name is very Anglo, but his nickname with his family is very Spanish and is more a description of his personality/familial ties than strictly a “name.”

Was Spanish spoken at your house when you were a kid? Just curious. I didn't think of you as someone who might be fluent in Spanish, though it's perhaps more accurate to say that I never thought about you and Spanish speaking ever. I always like to know stuff like this about posters.

Anyway, now that I think about it, my experience with this sort of thing comes almost exclusively from East Asians. We all know a "Steve" Kim or Chang whose given name is actually Sung-Soo or Xue. Indians and Pakistanis don't really do it, not often at least. Jews do it sometimes. And ex-gf of mine went by Steven; his real name was Schlomo.

Anyway, thanks for answering. Good points. On a related note, do you know the song "Heroin" by the Velvet Underground. There's a line near the end, never gets much attention, like "I just don't care anymore, about all the jim jims in this town, and all the politicians making crazy sounds." I've always been curious about that word jim-jim. Lou Reed said it meant a fake person. I wonder if it's a hidden slur against Chinese people -- i.e. the guy at the dry cleaner who barely speaks English but says his name is "Jim." I really like that song (though I have never and would never actually use H) and that has always bothered me a little bit. I have no confirmation of my suspicion.
