Yeah it did look like that a littleWait, did that guy just tear gas his own car?
It’s never a good day to be a dog when Kristi’s in town. For locals - this is not the day to walk your dog.
My dad is fluent (and actually lived a few years in Cuba because his stepdad was Cuban), but he never really emphasized it in the house growing up so I am not (my mom is white and knows next to no Spanish). I know a fair bit between school and growing up in South Florida, but far from fluent. My dad’s sister married a Cuban guy though, so my cousins on that side are all fluent. Was Spanish spoken at your house when you were a kid? Just curious. I didn't think of you as someone who might be fluent in Spanish, though it's perhaps more accurate to say that I never thought about you and Spanish speaking ever. I always like to know stuff like this about posters.
Anyway, now that I think about it, my experience with this sort of thing comes almost exclusively from East Asians. We all know a "Steve" Kim or Chang whose given name is actually Sung-Soo or Xue. Indians and Pakistanis don't really do it, not often at least. Jews do it sometimes. And ex-gf of mine went by Steven; his real name was Schlomo.
Anyway, thanks for answering. Good points. On a related note, do you know the song "Heroin" by the Velvet Underground. There's a line near the end, never gets much attention, like "I just don't care anymore, about all the jim jims in this town, and all the politicians making crazy sounds." I've always been curious about that word jim-jim. Lou Reed said it meant a fake person. I wonder if it's a hidden slur against Chinese people -- i.e. the guy at the dry cleaner who barely speaks English but says his name is "Jim." I really like that song (though I have never and would never actually use H) and that has always bothered me a little bit. I have no confirmation of my suspicion.
My only hope is they are vastly overreaching past what most Americans want and they’ll be held accountable for it. I’m confident in the former. Much less in the latter.Just blatant racism, and yet very few in the "news" media will likely call them out on it. They want to return to the 1924 National Origins Act, which virtually choked off immigration to this country for nearly forty years by creating a strict quota system for each nationality of immigrant. It was also a system which heavily favored white Northern and Western Europeans over Southern and Eastern Europeans, which were seen as inferior whites in those days - Italians, Poles, Russians (especially Russian Jews), and so on.
