Great insight! They are right next to each other, share a lot of the same geographic features, and both have a large Persian culture.

But they are different countries and are even spelled differently so you are completely correct that Iran is not Afghanistan. Do you have any other insights that we could all learn from?

I thought Iran's nuclear capabilities were already obliterated according to Trump.

I don't think the Middle East would feel any different about Israel if they attacked Iran on their own than they do now with the US leading it.

There are already allegations that Hegseth is going solo and fighting a shadow war without Trump's approval. I am sure there are leaks that want to dry run certain options, as well as intentional misinformation with various motivations (just like the NFL draft).

But at the end of the day, Trump's motivations are very easy to discern. He is a TACO and will always be a TACO. There is no way he will voluntarily keep this war going much longer, and certainly not till September.

I can think of one rattling around in Trump’s diseased brain. Something about postponing elections when we are in the middle of a war.

I’m not saying it makes any rational sense, I’m just saying I could see that thought crossing his mind.

Population (Persians vs. Pashtuns, Tajiks), education, history, modernization, capability, isolation, population, civilization, military might (Iran has a military of > 600K), training, accessibility, topography are all absurdly different

The Persians owned a massive empire in flux with Babylonians, Greeks, etc. for thousands of years and later a major stop on the Silk Road.

I realize that many Americans (especially in the political party I left) can barely tell the difference between Semitic people (Arabs, Hebrews), Persians, Turks, Armenians, Pashtuns, Kurds, Punjabs, Ancestral North Indians and Ancestral South Indians)...but don't be so American.

I've worked with students and faculty from all over the Middle East and South Asia. The ancient rivalries/divides run deep.

Anything is possible, but Trump doesn't need Iran as an excuse to do something stupid. He can gin up all sorts of supposed emergencies. And there is simply too much time and too much economic tanking between now and November for Iran to keep going.

Yes, but that doesn’t mean the post about CENTCOM is misinformation. It could be a legit projection based on whatever Trump said to someone 6 hours earlier.

That's Israel's problem. I don't give a shit about Bibi and Israel. It's time they fight their own fight. The European Zionists wanted a Jewish homeland (colony) smack dab in the middle of the Arabic-speaking Muslim world, and the Arabic-speaking Muslim world didn't want them there, so they have to deal with the consequences.
